Chapter 6 - The Ambush at the Safehouse

Despite Lorenzo’s arrest, the Moretti empire was not entirely secured.
Lorenzo had spent thirty years building an underground network of shadow contractors, dark-web mercenaries, and corrupt syndicate enforcers who knew that if Lorenzo went down, their offshore paychecks would dry up forever.
Two days after the boardroom showdown, Alessandro moved Elena and Emma to his most secure private location: an isolated, cliffside estate in Montauk, Long Island, fortified with bulletproof glass, motion sensors, and a twenty-man elite security detail.
It was 11:00 PM. A thunderstorm roared over the Atlantic Ocean, crashing violent waves against the rocks below the cliff.
Inside the estate’s private library, a warm fire crackled in the stone hearth.
Elena sat in a plush leather armchair, watching Emma sleep peacefully on a small daybed wrapped in a fleece blanket.
Alessandro stood by the glass doors, looking out into the sheet of driving rain. He held a glass of dark scotch, his expression thoughtful and dark.
“You haven't slept in two days,” Elena said softly, standing up and walking over to him.
“I don't sleep when my family is exposed,” Alessandro replied, setting his glass down on a side table. He turned to face her, reaching out to gently trace the contour of her collarbone. “Lorenzo’s right-hand man, a rogue mercenary named Vance, went off the grid six hours ago. He took three millions in cash from a hidden vault in Queens.”
“You think he’s coming for us?” Elena asked, her heart tightening.
“I know he is,” Alessandro said flatly. “He thinks if he eliminates Emma and you, Lorenzo’s legal team can claim the trust default clause.”
Before Elena could respond, every light in the mansion suddenly cut out!
The hum of the central generator died instantly, plunging the estate into pitch blackness, illuminated only by the rhythmic orange glow of the fireplace and the jagged flashes of lightning outside.
CRASH!
The heavy glass doors of the rear patio shattered inward!
“CONTACT!” Marcus’s voice roared through the security comms from the hallway, followed immediately by the sharp, deafening chatter of automatic gunfire!
Elena gasped, sprinting toward the daybed to cover Emma with her own body.
Alessandro didn't panic. His training kicked in with terrifying speed. He drew a custom matte-black pistol from a hidden compartment under the library desk, flicking off the safety with a swift click.
“Elena! Under the desk! Now!” Alessandro commanded.
Three men in black tactical gear and night-vision goggles burst through the broken patio doors, their weapons raised!
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Alessandro fired three precise shots into the darkness. The lead mercenary dropped instantly, his body crashing through a glass coffee table. The second intruder fell backward onto the terrace, struck directly in the chest.
The third mercenary dove behind a heavy leather sofa, blind-firing a spray of submachine-gun fire across the room! Books exploded off the shelves, plaster raining down like white snow!
“Elena! Stay down!” Alessandro shouted, ducking behind the mahogany desk as bullets tore through the wood.
Through the darkness, Elena saw something that made her blood run cold.
A fourth mercenary had slipped through the side balcony window behind Alessandro’s blind spot! The man raised a heavy suppressed pistol, aiming directly at the back of Alessandro’s head!
There was no time to scream a warning.
Elena didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy bronze statue of a horse from the side table, leaped over the fallen bookshelf, and slammed the heavy metal statue with all her strength directly into the side of the mercenary’s helmet!
CRACK!
The man staggered sideways, his shot wild, punching a hole harmlessly into the ceiling.
Alessandro spun around instantly, taking in the scene in a fraction of a second. He fired two swift rounds into the mercenary’s chest, dropping him instantly.
Alessandro grabbed Elena, pulling her against his chest, his heart hammering wild rhythms against her ribs.
“You saved my life,” Alessandro breathed, staring at her in sheer awe amidst the smoke and gunpowder haze.
“Nobody touches my family,” Elena spat, her eyes blazing with fierce, dangerous passion.
Outside the library, the sound of gunfire quickly subsided as Marcus and his elite detail swept the remaining corridors, neutralizing the remaining attackers.
Marcus stepped into the library, tactical flashlight sweeping the room, his weapon lowered.
“House is clear, Boss,” Marcus reported, breathing heavily. “Vance is dead on the lawn. They didn't make it past the perimeter perimeter detail.”
Alessandro looked down at Elena, then at Emma, who was crying softly under the desk, terrified by the noise.

Alessandro knelt down, pulling Emma into his arms, while keeping his other arm locked firmly around Elena’s waist.
“It’s over,” Alessandro declared, his voice ringing through the ruined library like a promise forged in steel. “The shadows are gone. Tomorrow, the world learns who we are.”
