Chapter 2 - The Gilded Halls of Sanquhar Clinic

The Sanquhar Clinic sat on Manhattan’s exclusive Park Avenue, an institution where discretion was bought and sold at astronomical rates. Its limestone facade was immaculate, framed by manicured boxwood hedges and guarded by attendants who treated every arriving vehicle as if royalty were stepping out.
Adrian Castillo strode through the revolving glass doors with the stride of a man who believed he owned the horizon. Beside him, his mother, Margaret, adjusted her diamond-encrusted brooch, her expression a mask of patrician superiority. Vanessa walked slightly behind them, her phone already out as she scrolled through social media updates, eager to broadcast the morning's triumph.
“Chloe must be thrilled,” Margaret murmured, her voice carrying the dry, brittle tone that had terrorized household staff and junior executives for decades. “Finally, a proper heir to carry the Castillo name into the next century. That other woman—Elena—could never understand what it means to belong to a dynasty.”
Adrian offered a tight, self-satisfied smile. “Elena was a ghost, Mother. Functional, perhaps, in the early days when my firm was finding its footing, but entirely lacking the breeding required for our circle. Letting her go today was the easiest decision I’ve ever made.”
They swept into the private VIP waiting lounge on the third floor. The room was outfitted with velvet upholstery, brushed gold accents, and a low murmur of classical music drifting from hidden speakers.
Chloe sat on a plush cream-colored chaise lounge, wrapped in a designer cashmere shawl that cost more than a month of groceries for an average family. Her blonde hair was styled in loose, cascading waves, and her makeup was flawless. At twenty-four, she possessed the sharp, predatory beauty of someone who knew exactly how to leverage youth against vulnerability.
“Adrian!” Chloe cooed, rising gracefully as they entered. She pressed herself against his chest, careful not to mess her collar. “I was beginning to worry the lawyers trapped you. Did everything go smoothly?”
“Like clockwork,” Adrian laughed, kissing the top of her head. “She signed everything without a peep. Didn’t ask for alimony, didn’t fight over the accounts, didn’t even look at the property clauses. She was too busy packing her bags and scurrying off with the kids.”
Margaret patted Chloe’s cheek with a jeweled hand. “Good riddance. A clean break is the only way to handle commoners. Now, darling, how is our little miracle holding up? Have they called us in for the scan yet?”
“Any minute now,” Chloe smiled, resting a hand over her slightly rounded stomach. The gesture was practiced, polished for maximum effect. “Dr. Reynolds’ assistant said this session would include the comprehensive chromosomal and genetic panel. Standard procedure for high-end concierge care, to ensure everything is... perfect.”

Adrian beamed, feeling an intoxicating rush of absolute invincibility. He had shed a burdensome marriage, secured a multi-million-dollar downtown penthouse under Chloe’s name using diverted corporate liquidity, and was about to witness the formal certification of his legacy. He felt untouchable.
Outside the tall arched windows, the morning mist began to clear over Park Avenue, revealing a brilliant, sharp sunlight. Yet, three floors down, a courier had just handed a sealed dossier to the front desk receptionist, marked with a red wax seal bearing the insignia of Dawson & Associates.
