Chapter 5 - The Anatomy of a Lie

Back inside Suite 304 of Sanquhar Clinic, the temperature in the room felt sub-zero.

Adrian staggered backward, his hands gripping the back of a velvet chair as if he were about to collapse. “What... what did you just say? Run that test again. There’s been a clerical error. Switch the files—you’ve mixed up my sample with someone else’s!”

“There is no error, Mr. Castillo,” Dr. Reynolds said coldly, pressing a button on his desk to bring up the institutional seal on the digital report. “Our lab utilizes triple-redundant sequencing for all VIP paternity profiles. The biological father of this child carries a specific set of homozygous markers completely absent in your genomic map.”

Adrian whipped his head around, his eyes locking onto Chloe with a look of murderous disbelief. “Chloe... What is this? What is he talking about?!”

Chloe shrank back against the chaise lounge, her carefully constructed facade melting into a puddle of hysterical panic. Her makeup smeared as tears welled in her eyes, though they were tears of cornered desperation, not sorrow.

“Adrian, listen to me—it’s not what you think!” she stammered, her voice rising in pitch. “Medical tests are wrong all the time! They’re incompetent!”

“Incompetent?!” Margaret shrieked, slamming her cane against the floor with a force that rattled the delicate teacups on the side table. Her face had turned an alarming shade of mottled purple. “You ungrateful, deceitful little tramp! You brought a bastard into our family and tried to pass it off as a Castillo heir?!”

“Mother, shut up!” Adrian roared, his voice cracking with humiliation. He grabbed Chloe by the arm, yanking her up from the chaise. “Tell me the truth right now! Who the hell is the father?!”

“Let go of me! You’re hurting me!” Chloe screamed, clawing at his hands. “Fine! You want the truth?! You’re so pathetic, Adrian! You thought you were some big shot, but you were broke! For months you couldn’t even pay for dinners without borrowing from your mother or crying about your failing business! I needed security! I needed a penthouse and a future!”

“So you slept with someone else?” Vanessa whispered, her hands covering her mouth in sheer horror as the realization of what this meant for their social standing settled over her like a shroud.

“I slept with Marcus Vance!” Chloe shrieked hysterically, throwing the name out like a grenade. “The developer! The billionaire who actually owns the penthouse you pretended to buy me, Adrian! He has real money! He has actual power! Not like you, with your fake suits and your exhausted, boring wife whom you couldn’t even control!”

The confession hung in the air, heavy and poisonous.

Adrian released her arm as if he had been burned by hot iron. He staggered back, his chest heaving, his eyes wild. All the arrogance, all the cruel condescension he had hurled at Elena just hours ago, evaporated into nothingness. He had traded a brilliant, loyal woman who sustained his life in the shadows, abandoned his own flesh and blood calling them "dead weight," and ruined his entire existence for a lying opportunist carrying another man's child.

Margaret clutched her chest, letting out a sharp gasp before collapsing backward into the velvet armchair.

“Mother!” Vanessa screamed, rushing to her side. “Call a nurse! Someone call a doctor right now!”

Dr. Reynolds calmly picked up his desk phone, his expression completely unmoved by the chaos unfolding before him. “Front desk? This is Suite 304. We require emergency medical assistance for an elderly patient experiencing acute shock. And security, please escort Ms. Davenport from the premises immediately.”

As nurses rushed into the room with a rolling gurney, Adrian sank slowly to his knees on the plush carpet, staring blankly at the polished oak floorboards. His empire of sand had washed away in a single minute.
