Chapter 4 - Above the Clouds

Six miles above the eastern seaboard, inside the plush cabin of a private Gulfstream jet, the hum of the twin turbofan engines was a soothing, rhythmic vibration.

Elena sat by the window, watching the endless sea of fluffy white clouds stretch out beneath them like an untouched canvas. Sunlight poured through the triple-paned glass, warming her face. Across the aisle, Noah was engrossed in sketching a fierce-looking dinosaur in his new notebook, while Lily had fallen asleep against the soft leather cushions, her small hand clutching a pink stuffed rabbit.

The heavy leather folder Attorney Dawson had given her lay open on the fold-down mahogany table.

Inside were documents that laid bare the anatomy of Adrian’s secret financial ruin and calculated betrayal. For months, Adrian had told her his architecture and consulting firm was merely experiencing a "market correction." In reality, he had been systematically looting corporate accounts, falsifying invoices, and siphoning funds into shell companies to finance Chloe’s lavish lifestyle, purchase the Park Avenue penthouse, and maintain an illusion of unstoppable wealth.

Worse still, Dawson’s investigative report revealed that Adrian had leveraged their family home—which Elena had quietly paid off using her own pharmaceutical research royalties years prior—as collateral for high-interest private loans without her knowledge.

When Adrian signed the divorce papers that morning, handing her primary custody and unrestricted travel rights without reading a single clause, he had unwittingly signed away the only legal buffer shielding him from corporate fraud charges. Under the terms drafted by Dawson and filed electronically with the Manhattan Supreme Court minutes before takeoff, Elena had assumed absolute power of attorney over remaining marital liquidation assets, leaving Adrian legally liable for the entirety of the corporate debt he had hidden.

My phone buzzed against the table.

A secure message from Attorney Dawson flashed on the encrypted screen: “The diagnostic results have just been delivered to Sanquhar Clinic. Dr. Reynolds executed the protocol precisely as discussed. The Castillo family is currently experiencing a total structural collapse. Shall I proceed with the asset freeze on the Park Avenue penthouse?”

Elena looked down at the message. A calm, profound sense of release washed over her. She picked up her phone and typed a single, decisive reply: “Proceed with full legal execution, Dawson. Let them reap every single seed they’ve sown.”

She locked the screen, turned back to the window, and watched the sunlight glinting off the aircraft’s wingtip. They were flying toward Barcelona—toward a new life, unburdened by ghosts, lies, or dead weight.
