Chapter 3 - The Doctor’s Verdict

The private examination room of Suite 304 was a masterclass in modern medical luxury. Soft recessed lighting illuminated pale oak walls, and a state-of-the-art ultrasound monitor stood ready in the corner like a silent sentinel.

Dr. Reynolds, a senior geneticist and obstetrician with graying temples and an unreadable expression, adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses as he looked over the preliminary lab results on his tablet. The door clicked open, and Adrian, Chloe, Margaret, and Vanessa filed in, bringing a wave of perfume and high-society chatter into the sterile quiet.

“Dr. Reynolds!” Adrian greeted heartily, extending a hand. “We’re ready for the grand reveal. Show us the future Castillo heir.”

Dr. Reynolds did not take Adrian’s hand immediately. Instead, he slowly lowered his tablet to the desk, his eyes scanning the four faces before him with a heavy, professional detachment.

“Mr. Castillo. Please, take a seat,” Dr. Reynolds said, his voice level and devoid of the customary enthusiastic warmth he usually reserved for his wealthy clientele.

Adrian paused, his hand hanging mid-air. “Is something wrong? The scans we did last week were flawless.”

“The scans were preliminary, Mr. Reynolds—pardon me, Mr. Castillo,” the doctor corrected himself smoothly. “However, Sanquhar Clinic maintains a rigorous protocol for our concierge maternity packages. Before any birth certificate is processed or trust allocations are registered under our institutional umbrella, we require comprehensive genetic verification and lineage cross-matching, particularly when complex corporate holdings or family trusts are attached to the newborn’s legal standing.”

Margaret frowned, leaning heavily on her cane. “What is the meaning of this preamble, Doctor? We are not here for a lecture on hospital bureaucracy. We are here to confirm the child’s paternity and gender.”

“Indeed, Mrs. Castillo,” Dr. Reynolds replied quietly. He turned the monitor screen toward them. On it displayed a series of DNA electropherograms—complex genetic sequencing charts showing peaks and valleys of nucleotide markers. “The comprehensive genetic panel returned from our central laboratory thirty minutes ago.”

Chloe shifted slightly on the examination table, her fingernails digging into the edge of the cream leather. A sudden, subtle paleness crept beneath her foundation. “Is... is the baby healthy?”

“The child’s health indicators are entirely normal, Ms. Davenport,” Dr. Reynolds said, looking directly at Chloe. Then, his gaze shifted to Adrian. “However, the genetic markers tell a very specific story regarding paternal lineage.”

Adrian let out an uneasy chuckle, though a bead of cold sweat began to form at his hairline. “Well? Out with it. Does the boy carry the Castillo chromosomal traits or not?”

Dr. Reynolds folded his hands on the desk. “Mr. Castillo, human genetics are governed by immutable laws. A child inherits fifty percent of their genetic material from the biological mother and fifty percent from the biological father. When we cross-referenced Ms. Davenport’s fetal DNA extraction with your genetic profile—which we conveniently had on file from your previous executive physicals here at Sanquhar—the results were definitive.”

The room went dead silent. The classical music playing softly in the ceiling speakers sounded suddenly jarring.

“Definitive of what?” Vanessa snapped, her voice cutting through the quiet like broken glass.

May you like

Dr. Reynolds looked straight into Adrian’s widening eyes.

“Mr. Castillo, you share zero genetic compatibility with this fetus. You are not the biological father of this child.”
