Chapter 4 - The Emergency Protocol

Lauren stared at him through a haze of pain and extreme exhaustion. “You… you didn't know?”

“She told me you took twenty million dollars,” Alexander wept, holding her frail body against his chest as gently as if she were made of glass. “She showed me forged divorce papers. She told me you left with another man and warned me that if I looked for you, you would destroy my company in the press.”

Lauren let out a broken, wheezing laugh that quickly turned into a violent coughing fit.

Alexander held her steady, his hand resting over her back. He could feel every single rib beneath her thin cotton shirt. Her body was burning with fever, her pulse fluttering against her neck like the wings of a trapped bird.

“She came to the hospital… three years ago,” Lauren rasped, tears leaking from the corners of her closed eyes. “Two days after the doctor told me my heart was failing. She brought two lawyers and a security guard. She told me… if I didn't sign the papers and disappear… she would use her judges to declare me an unfit mother and take Sophia away forever.”

Lauren reached up with a weak, trembling hand, touching Alexander’s wet cheek.

“I didn't care about the money, Alexander,” she whispered. “I just wanted my daughter to know her mother’s love before I died. She promised me… she said if I stayed hidden, she would make sure you never suffered… she said you were happy without us.”

“I was dying inside every single day,” Alexander spat, his voice laced with pure, unfiltered poison directed at his mother.

He turned toward the doorway where Marcus was standing.

“Marcus!” Alexander ordered, his tone shifting into military crispness. “Call St. Jude’s Private Hospital. Tell Dr. Harrison to clear the entire VIP cardiac intensive care wing immediately. Get the medical transport team here now!”

“On it, sir!” Marcus replied, pulling his satellite phone from his vest.

“No… Alexander, no,” Lauren panicked weakly, grabbing his lapel. “We can’t afford a hospital… Victoria said if I went to a hospital, the doctors would report me to social services—”

“Victoria Sterling no longer exists in our lives,” Alexander interrupted firmly, looking straight into Lauren’s hazel eyes with absolute authority. “I own St. Jude’s Hospital, Lauren. The doctors work for me. You are my wife. You are a Sterling. And you are going to live.”

Ten minutes later, the quiet Brooklyn alley was filled with the flashing red lights of an elite private ambulance.

Four paramedics rushed down the damp concrete stairs with a specialized transport gurney. They carefully lifted Lauren, connecting her to portable oxygen and heart-monitoring telemetry units.

Alexander walked right beside the gurney, holding Sophia securely in his left arm while keeping his right hand locked around Lauren’s cold fingers.

As they loaded Lauren into the back of the ambulance, the cardiac monitor let out an alarming, rapid sequence of high-pitched beeps.

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!

“BP is dropping rapidly!” the lead paramedic shouted, inserting an IV line into Lauren’s arm. “Systolic is down to sixty! She’s slipping into cardiogenic shock!”

Lauren’s eyes rolled back. Her hand went limp in Alexander’s grip.

“Lauren!” Alexander screamed, his voice echoing through the rainy night. “Lauren, stay with me!”

Sophia began to cry, clinging tightly to her father’s neck. “Mommy! Mommy!”

“Drive!” Alexander roared at the paramedic in the front seat, slamming the rear ambulance doors shut. “Drive or I’ll tear this city apart!”
