Chapter 8 - The Miracle in OR Three

By 1:00 PM, the storm outside St. Jude’s Private Hospital had cleared, leaving bright sunshine streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the private ICU recovery suite.
Alexander sat beside the hospital bed, holding a warm cup of tea in one hand and keeping his other hand wrapped around Lauren’s fingers.
On the couch in the corner of the room, little Sophia was fast asleep, wrapped in a fluffy yellow blanket, her small face peaceful and full of food after enjoying a warm meal prepared by the hospital’s private executive chef.
The door opened quietly. Dr. Marcus Harrison stepped into the room, pulling off his surgical mask, a weary but triumphant smile on his face.
Alexander stood up immediately. “Harrison? How is she?”
“It was a miracle, Alexander,” Dr. Harrison whispered, checking the digital telemetry monitors above the bed. “The damage to her heart muscle was severe, but because of her age, her vascular system responded incredibly well to the emergency bypass and mechanical pump support.”
“Is she going to make it?” Alexander asked, his voice trembling with desperation.
“She’s going to live, Alexander,” Harrison smiled broadly. “We placed a state-of-the-art ventricular assist device to take the pressure off her heart. With proper nutrition, medication, and rest, her heart tissue will fully regenerate over the next six months. She’s out of danger.”
A violent sob of pure relief escaped Alexander’s chest. He dropped his head onto the bedsheets, weeping tears of profound gratitude.
“Thank you,” Alexander choked out. “Thank you, Marcus.”
“Thank your daughter,” Harrison said softly, looking at sleeping Sophia. “If that little girl hadn't walked down to that dumpster last night, Lauren wouldn't have survived another twenty-four hours.”
As if hearing her name, Lauren’s eyelids fluttered open.
The harsh grey color had faded from her skin, replaced by a faint, healthy pink tint beneath the warm lights. She blinked slowly, looking up at the ceiling, then turning her head to see Alexander sitting beside her.
“Alex…” she whispered, her voice weak but clear.
“I’m here, my love,” Alexander said, rushing to press a gentle kiss against her knuckles, her forehead, her lips. “I’m right here. You’re safe. The doctor says you’re going to be okay.”
Lauren looked around the bright, immaculate hospital room, taking in the soft blanket, the flowers, the clean air.
“Where… where is Victoria?” Lauren asked fearfully.
“She’s in a jail cell,” Alexander answered firmly, looking into her hazel eyes with absolute love. “She will never hurt you again. She will never touch our daughter again. It’s over, Lauren. I’m taking care of everything.”
Lauren’s eyes drifted to the couch where Sophia was sleeping peacefully. A single tear of joy slipped down her cheek.

“She brought me bread, Alex,” Lauren sobbed softly. “My sweet little girl tried to save my life…”
“And now I’m going to spend the rest of my life making sure neither of you ever suffers again,” Alexander swore, leaning down to rest his forehead against hers.
