Chapter 9 - The Trial and Purification

Six months later. August 2026.

The New York Supreme Court was packed to capacity for the high-profile sentencing hearing of Victoria Sterling.

The disgraced matriarch sat at the defense table in an orange prison jumpsuit, her hair white and unkempt, her face aged ten years by six months spent in a Rikers Island holding cell. Her high-society friends had completely abandoned her, and her multi-million-dollar legal team had failed to break the ironclad financial and medical evidence presented by the prosecution.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery were Alexander and Lauren Sterling.

Lauren looked radiant. She wore an elegant cream-colored wool dress, her dark hair long and shiny, her cheeks full of health and beauty. Beside her, Alexander looked regal in a dark suit, his arm resting protectively around his wife’s waist.

The judge slammed his heavy wooden gavel onto the bench.

BANG!

“Victoria Sterling,” the judge announced, looking over his glasses at the defense table with utter disdain. “Your actions represent a level of calculated cruelty, financial greed, and maternal betrayal that this court rarely witnesses. You systematically starved a three-year-old child and allowed an innocent young mother to linger near death in a condemned cellar solely to satisfy your vanity and corporate ambition.”

Victoria wept bitterly, clutching her hands together. “Your Honor… please… I was protecting my family legacy—”

“Silence!” the judge ordered sharply. “For the counts of grand larceny, wire fraud, child endangerment, and felony extortion, I sentence you to twenty-five years in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility without the possibility of early parole.”

BANG!

The courtroom erupted into quiet murmurs as court officers pulled Victoria to her feet, dragging her through the side exit doors toward her permanent prison fate.

Victoria turned her head as she was led away, locking eyes with Alexander one last time, pleading for mercy with her tears.

Alexander did not blink. He did not react. He simply turned his body toward Lauren, taking her hand in his, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun.
