Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Prodigal Son

The siren lights cut through the heavy December fog surrounding Villa Valcárcel, painting the ivory limestone walls in rhythmic flashes of blue and red. Inside the grand ballroom, the silence was suffocating. The two hundred guests—a collection of Madrid’s most influential industrialists, politicians, and aristocrats—stood frozen around the perimeter of the room, their champagne flutes lingering midway to their lips.
Dr. Mateo Ramos, a top obstetrician who happened to be attending the gala as a family friend, remained on his knees beside Elena. He held her wrist, his thumb pressed against her rapid pulse while his other hand gently palpated the contours of her 34-week belly.
"Her pulse is racing, and her uterine tone is dangerously high," Dr. Ramos announced, his stern voice cutting through the quiet room as he looked up at the estate manager, Marta Sanz. "The paramedics need to get her on a gurney immediately. We need an emergency ultrasound to check for placental abruption. Any blunt trauma at thirty-four weeks can be fatal."
Alejandro Valcárcel took a step forward, his polished leather shoes clicking against the marble floor. He attempted to pull his velvet suit jacket back into place, forcing a dismissive laugh that echoed hollowly off the high vaulted ceilings.
"Mateo, let’s not turn a simple slip into a theatrical production," Alejandro said smoothly, though a subtle bead of sweat had formed at his hairline. He gestured toward Elena with a hand that trembled ever so slightly. "My wife has been under immense emotional strain since my father passed away. Her balance is off. She lost her footing on her gown. I merely reached out to catch her, but unfortunately, she fell."
"You pushed her, Alejandro!"
The voice came from the edge of the crowd. It belonged to Doña Sofia, Don Gabriel’s widowed sister, an eighty-year-old matriarch who leaned heavily on an ebony cane. She stepped out into the open floor, her eyes flashing with pure fury as her cane struck the marble with a sharp, echoing crack. "I stood ten feet away from you. I saw your hand strike her shoulder. I saw you stand over her like a tyrant while she bled on the floor of my brother's house!"
Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Alejandro’s jaw tightened. He turned his glare toward his aunt, but before he could speak, two officers from the Guardia Civil pushed through the glass double doors of the ballroom, followed closely by two paramedics wheeling a folding gurney.
"Who called emergency services?" the lead officer, Captain Javier Torres, demanded, his eyes sweeping over the scene until they landed on Elena lying on the floor, surrounded by cracked glass and her shattered phone.
"I did," Marta Sanz said firmly, stepping forward with her chin held high. "And I want this man arrested for aggravated assault against his pregnant wife."
Claudia Varela, who had been shrinking back into the shadows near the grand piano, suddenly found her voice. She stepped alongside Alejandro, her black satin dress rustling loudly. "That is absurd! This woman is a disgruntled employee! Elena tripped on her own hem. Alejandro was trying to assist her. You have no right to come into a private residence and make false accusations!"
Captain Torres looked at Claudia coldly, then turned to Dr. Ramos. "Doctor, what is the victim’s condition?"
"She was subjected to violent physical trauma," Dr. Ramos stated, rising to his feet as the paramedics knelt beside Elena to secure her onto a backboard. "She is thirty-four weeks pregnant with a high-risk gestation. She requires immediate transport to Hospital Universitario La Paz. If she suffers an abruption, both she and the child could bleed out within minutes."
Elena gripped the paramedic’s sleeve as they carefully lifted her onto the gurney. Her face was pale, but her dark eyes were bright, locked onto Alejandro with a terrifying, unyielding calm.
"Check his pocket, Captain," Elena rasped, her voice thin but sharp enough to pierce the room.
Alejandro’s hand instinctively twitched toward his inner coat pocket.
"What is she talking about?" Captain Torres asked, taking a deliberate step toward Alejandro.
"My father's private vault key," Elena said, taking a ragged breath as the oxygen mask was placed over her mouth. "He stole it from my desk this morning... to destroy the secondary trust documents. But the notification... the transfer... was already automated by Naomi Becker at midnight."
Alejandro backed away, his face draining of all color. "She's delusional! She’s suffering from a pregnancy-induced breakdown! I am the head of Valcárcel Industrial! I own this estate!"
"You own nothing, Alejandro," a sharp, cultured voice called out from the doorway.
Naomi Becker stepped into the ballroom. She was a woman in her late fifties, wearing a sharp grey power suit, carrying a heavy leather briefcase. As the chief legal executor of the late Don Gabriel Valcárcel’s personal estate, her presence carried absolute authority. She didn't look at the crowd; her eyes were fixed entirely on Alejandro.
"Captain Torres," Naomi said, pulling a red folder from her briefcase. "As the legal representative of the Valcárcel Estate and Valcárcel Industrial, I am presenting you with an emergency restraining order and an order of eviction issued two hours ago by the High Court of Madrid. Alejandro Valcárcel was stripped of all corporate voting rights and executive power by his father three days before Don Gabriel’s passing. He is currently trespassing on property owned entirely by the Valcárcel Family Trust—whose sole trustee and owner is Elena Valcárcel."
A gasp swept through the ballroom like a sudden gust of wind.
Claudia took an abrupt step back from Alejandro, her eyes widening in horror as she stared at him. "What? What is she talking about, Alejandro? You said the board voted in your favor yesterday!"
Alejandro didn't answer her. His eyes were wide, fixed on Naomi. "You dirty old snake... you helped her manipulate my father while he was dying! He was not in his right mind!"
"Don Gabriel was of sound mind, Alejandro," Naomi replied smoothly, opening the red folder. "In fact, he was lucid enough to record his final conversation with you in his study on November twelfth. The conversation where you threatened to commit Elena to a private psychiatric facility in Switzerland if she did not sign over her unborn child's legal inheritance rights to your offshore shell company in Panama."
The crowd erupted into hushed shouts of indignation. Several prominent board members of Valcárcel Industrial pulled away from Alejandro, as if proximity to him had suddenly become toxic.
"That's a lie! That recording is fraudulent!" Alejandro roared, lunging toward Naomi.
Before he could take two steps, Captain Torres and his partner grabbed Alejandro by his arms, forcing his hands behind his back. The metallic click of handcuffs binding Alejandro's wrists sounded clearly across the vast room.
"Alejandro Valcárcel, you are under arrest for domestic assault, reckless endangerment, and attempted fraud," Captain Torres barked, shoving Alejandro toward the exit.
"Release me! Do you know who I am?" Alejandro screamed, thrashing against the officers' grip as he was escorted past his former peers, friends, and business partners, who turned their backs on him one by one. "Claudia! Call the attorneys! Call Senator Vega! Claudia!"
Claudia Varela stood frozen under the glitter of the crystal chandeliers. She watched as the man she had spent six months manipulating was dragged away in chains, his pristine tuxedo rumpled, his dignity entirely destroyed. She took a step toward the side door, hoping to slip out unnoticed, but Marta Sanz immediately stepped into her path, flanked by two private security guards.
"Your belongings have already been packed into three trash bags and placed outside the security gate, Miss Varela," Marta said with a cold, terrifying smile. "You have sixty seconds to leave Villa Valcárcel before I have you arrested for criminal trespassing."

As the paramedics rolled Elena out through the grand entrance, the cold night air hit her face. She looked up at the star-filled Spanish sky, holding her abdomen tightly as another small, miraculous kick thumped against her palm.
The nightmare at Villa Valcárcel was over, but as the ambulance doors slammed shut and the vehicle tore into the night toward La Paz Hospital, Elena knew the real war for her daughter's future had only just begun.
