Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of La Paz

The white, sterile lights of the High-Risk Obstetrics Unit at Hospital Universitario La Paz flickered overhead as Elena was wheeled down the corridor at a breakneck pace. Monitors beeped rhythmically around her, tracking her blood pressure, heart rate, and fetal contractions.

Dr. Ramos walked beside the gurney, barking orders to the head nurse. "Get two units of O-negative blood on standby. Set up a continuous cardiotocography monitor. I want a full transabdominal ultrasound done within three minutes!"

Elena gripped the metal guardrail of the bed, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. A dull, throbbing ache radiate through her lower back and pelvis, a terrifying reminder of the force with which her body had hit the marble floor.

"Doctor..." Elena choked out, her voice raw. "Is she... is my baby okay?"

Dr. Ramos stopped the gurney outside Operating Room 3 and placed a gentle, warm hand over her trembling fingers. "Elena, listen to me. You are experiencing uterine irritability and early contractions brought on by the trauma. We are going to administer tocolytic medications to stop the labor, along with steroids to accelerate the baby's lung development in case we have to perform an emergency Cesarean section. You need to focus on breathing. Let us do the fighting for you."

Within minutes, Elena was transferred to a private room in the intensive monitoring ward. The room was dark, lit only by the soft blue glow of the fetal monitor. The rhythmic thump-thump-thump of her daughter’s heart echoed through the small space, a precious sound that made tears spill down Elena’s pale cheeks.

The heavy wooden door clicked open, and Naomi Becker walked in softly, carrying her leather briefcase and a small overnight bag. She set the bag down on a chair and approached the bedside, her sharp eyes softening with rare maternal warmth.

"The doctors told me you’re stabilizing," Naomi said softly, sitting on the edge of the mattress and taking Elena's hand. "The contractions are slowing down."

"She's strong, Naomi," Elena whispered, looking at the monitor. "She survived him tonight."

"She is a Valcárcel," Naomi replied, a proud smile touching her lips. "Real Valcárcel blood doesn't break easily. Gabriel knew that. That’s why he left everything to you, Elena. Not to his son, who carried his name but possessed none of his character."

Elena squeezed Naomi's hand. "Tell me what happened at the police station. Is Alejandro still in custody?"

Naomi’s expression hardened, her legal demeanor instantly returning. "Captain Torres booked him on two felony counts: assault on a pregnant person and attempted extortion. However, we have a problem. Claudia Varela’s father, Senator Fernando Varela, has already intervened. He brought in Madrid’s top criminal defense attorney, Ignacio Sterling."

Elena pulled herself up slightly against her pillows, a deep furrow appearing between her brows. "Sterling? He’s infamous for getting high-profile corrupt executives out on technicalities."

"Precisely," Naomi nodded grimly. "Sterling is currently arguing before a duty judge that the incident was an accidental slip, claiming the ballroom video footage is inconclusive because of the crowd's shadows. He is attempting to post a fifty-thousand-euro bail to have Alejandro released before dawn."

"He cannot be released!" Elena said, her heart rate spiking on the monitor screen. "If he gets out, he will use his remaining contacts in the company to hide the financial records. He spent months draining funds from Valcárcel Industrial!"

"Calm down, Elena," Naomi urged gently, adjusting the blankets around her shoulders. "Sterling might be fast, but Don Gabriel was faster. Your late father-in-law anticipated every move Alejandro would make if he were pushed into a corner."

Naomi reached into her briefcase and pulled out a sleek, black encrypted flash drive.

"What is that?" Elena asked.

"This is the master key to Don Gabriel’s private ledger," Naomi explained, holding the drive up to the dim blue light. "For three years, while Alejandro thought he was cleverly embezzling money through shell corporations in Panama and Luxembourg to fund his affair with Claudia and pay off his gambling debts in Marbella, Gabriel was documenting every single transaction. Every wire transfer, every forged signature, every secret bank account."

Naomi lowered her voice. "There is over twelve million euros missing from the employee pension fund alone, Elena. Alejandro didn't just try to overthrow you; he committed massive corporate fraud that could sink Valcárcel Industrial if it comes to light unprepared."

Elena closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "Gabriel kept all of this hidden from me... why?"

"Because he was trying to protect you and the baby," Naomi said softly. "Gabriel knew he was dying of heart failure. He knew that if he confronted Alejandro directly, Alejandro would react violently—exactly as he did tonight. Gabriel waited until the trust transfer was completely legally airtight, tied directly to your pregnancy milestone, so Alejandro could not challenge it in probate court."

Naomi leaned in closer. "Gabriel left a message for you on this drive. A video recorded forty-eight hours before he passed away. Do you want to see it?"

Elena nodded, her eyes shining with fresh tears.

Naomi plugged the drive into a sleek tablet, tapped the screen a few times, and handed it to Elena.

The screen flickered, revealing the image of Don Gabriel Valcárcel sitting in his high-backed leather chair in the library of Villa Valcárcel. He looked frail, his cheeks sunken, but his dark eyes burned with the same fierce intelligence that had built an industrial empire.

"My dearest Elena," Don Gabriel’s recorded voice was soft, rough with age, yet deeply affectionate. "If you are watching this, it means my foolish son has finally shown you the true depth of his depravity. I am so deeply sorry, my girl. I brought Alejandro into this world, but I failed to raise a man of honor. He saw you not as a wife, but as an obstacle to his greed."

Gabriel took a heavy, raspy breath on the video, resting his hand on a silver-framed photograph of Elena and him sitting in the estate gardens.

"You came into this family five years ago, Elena, and you brought light back into this cold house. You cared for me when my own son couldn't be bothered to visit my hospital room. You earned the respect of our workers, our board, and our family. The blood in your veins may not carry the Valcárcel name, but the child in your womb carries the future of everything I built."

Gabriel leaned closer to the camera, his expression turning deadly serious.

"Do not show Alejandro mercy, Elena. He will use every lie, every connection, every euro he stole to destroy you. Take the ledger. Go to the prosecutor's office. Take Valcárcel Industrial and strip him of the name he disgraced. Protect my granddaughter. Be the matriarch I always knew you were meant to be."

The screen faded to black.

Elena held the tablet against her chest, her breathing steadying, her mind clearing of all fear. The self-doubt that had plagued her during her months of marriage to Alejandro evaporated, replaced by a cold, unstoppable determination.

She looked up at Naomi. "Call Captain Torres back. Tell him we aren't just filing domestic violence charges."

Elena handed the encrypted flash drive to Naomi. "Tell him we are filing charges for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and treason against the estate. Let's see if Senator Varela wants to pay the bail for a man who stole millions from his own workers."
