Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Siege

At 1:45 PM, the plaza in front of the glittering glass skyscraper at Paseo de la Castellana 115 was filled with over fifty journalists, news vans, and flashing satellite trucks. The news of Alejandro’s arrest had shaken the Spanish business world, and every financial news outlet in Europe was desperate for a statement.

A sleek black Mercedes Maybach pulled up to the curb, flanked by two private security SUVs.

The rear door opened, and Dr. Ramos stepped out first, carrying a medical bag, followed by two security guards who cleared a path through the shouting media.

Then, Elena Valcárcel stepped out.

She wore a tailored navy blue maternity suit that accentuated her pregnant silhouette, her dark hair pulled back into an elegant, immaculate chignon. She wore no jewelry except for a simple, silver signet ring that had belonged to Don Gabriel. She walked slowly, leaning slightly on Naomi Becker’s arm, but her head was held high, her posture radiating breathtaking power.

The flashes from thirty cameras illuminated her face like lightning. Reporters screamed questions, waving microphones over the security barrier.

"Señora Valcárcel! Is it true Alejandro pushed you at the gala?"

"Elena! Are you planning to sell Valcárcel Industrial?"

"How is your baby, Elena?"

Elena paused at the top of the marble steps leading into the skyscraper. She turned around slowly, looking directly into the primary news camera for RTVE.

"My baby daughter is strong, healthy, and safe," Elena said, her calm, clear voice carrying effortlessly over the noise of the crowd. "And as the majority shareholder and sole trustee of the Valcárcel Family Trust, I am here today to ensure that the corruption that threatened her future is excised from this company forever. Thank you."

Without taking another question, Elena turned and walked into the grand marble lobby, leaving the press in a frenzy behind her.

On the 28th floor, inside the executive boardroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

Gonzalo Rivas sat at the head of the long mahogany table, flanked by twelve senior board members. His face was flushed red, his tie loosened, his hands shuffling nervously through a stack of legal documents.

"We need to vote on this motion right now!" Rivas shouted, banging his fist on the table as he looked at his colleagues. "Alejandro is in jail! The company’s stock is plummeting! Elena Valcárcel is lying in a hospital bed, physically unable to manage a multinational corporation! If we do not appoint an interim administrative receiver today, the banks will freeze our credit lines by tomorrow morning!"

"You're rushing this, Gonzalo," spoke up Doña Carmen Blanco, an elderly, highly respected board member who had been a loyal ally of Don Gabriel for thirty years. "Elena holds sixty-two percent of the voting shares through the trust. Passing a motion without the majority shareholder present is a direct violation of our corporate bylaws!"

"She is medically incapacitated!" Rivas bellowed, waving a forged medical note he had obtained hours earlier. "Her pregnancy makes her unfit to—"

The heavy double oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding thud.

Gonzalo Rivas froze mid-sentence, his mouth staying open.

Elena Valcárcel walked into the room. She was surrounded by Naomi Becker, Marta Sanz, Captain Javier Torres in full uniform, and two forensic auditors carrying heavy black leather binders.

Silence descended upon the room like a heavy curtain. The twelve board members stood up instinctively from their leather chairs, out of sheer reflex and respect for the woman who carried the full authority of the Valcárcel name.

Elena walked slowly to the foot of the table, opposite Rivas. She rested both hands on the polished wood, looking at each board member one by one, her gaze lingering on Rivas until he broke eye contact, sweating profusely.

"Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen," Elena said softly, her tone dripping with ice. "Please, sit down. Don't let my presence interrupt your conversation, Gonzalo. You were saying something about my fitness to lead?"

Rivas swallowed hard, attempting to pull himself together. He cleared his throat and straightened his jacket. "Elena... we are glad to see you are out of the hospital, but this is a high-level executive meeting. You are under immense personal stress. We were simply moving to protect the company's financial stability during this unfortunate... family crisis."

"Family crisis?" Elena echoed, taking a seat at the head of the table that had once belonged to Don Gabriel. Naomi sat to her right, placing the thick binders on the wood with a loud thud.

"What happened at Villa Valcárcel was not a family crisis, Gonzalo," Elena continued, leaning forward. "It was a criminal act. An act perpetrated by a man who stole twelve million euros from our workers' pension fund, with the direct aid of people sitting in this very room."

A shocked gasp echoed through the board members. Several executives turned to look at Rivas with wide, terrified eyes.

"That is a slanderous accusation!" Rivas spat, his voice cracking with anxiety. "I have served this company for twenty years! You cannot come in here, heavily pregnant and emotionally unstable, making wild claims without proof!"

Naomi Becker opened the first binder, pulling out a set of certified banking documents stamped by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority.

"Gonzalo Rivas," Naomi announced in her booming, authoritative courtroom voice. "On March 14th of last year, three hundred thousand euros were transferred from Valcárcel Industrial's main operational account to 'Galerías Rivas S.L.' in Barcelona—a company registered under your daughter’s name. In exchange, you signed off on Alejandro’s unauthorized land acquisition in Marbella, which resulted in a four-million-euro loss for this corporation."

Naomi slid a second document across the table. "And on November second, you received an offshore wire transfer of fifty thousand euros from an account in Panama controlled by Claudia Varela, hours before you attempted to alter the company's proxy voting rules."

Rivas’s face turned completely white. He collapsed back into his leather chair, his hands shaking so violently he couldn't pick up the paper.

Elena stood up slowly, her hands resting on the table as she looked down at the broken man.

"Gonzalo Rivas," Elena commanded softly. "By the power vested in me as the trustee of sixty-two percent of the voting stock, I hereby terminate your employment as Vice Chairman of Valcárcel Industrial, effective immediately. Furthermore, Captain Torres is here to escort you to the prosecutor's office to answer for corporate bribery, embezzlement, and conspiracy."

Captain Torres stepped forward, placing a firm hand on Rivas’s shoulder. Rivas didn't fight. He offered no defense. He simply hung his head as he was stood up and led out of the boardroom in complete, humiliating defeat.

Elena turned to the remaining eleven board members, who sat in stunned, absolute silence.

"Is there anyone else in this room," Elena asked quietly, her dark eyes scanning their pale faces, "who wishes to question my fitness to lead this company?"

Not a single person moved. Not a single voice offered a challenge.

Doña Carmen Blanco stood up from her chair, raising her glass of water. "To Elena Valcárcel. The true Chairman of Valcárcel Industrial."

One by one, the other ten board members stood up, raising their hands in unanimous applause, sealing Elena’s absolute victory over the empire her late father-in-law had entrusted to her.
