Chapter 4 - The War Room

By nine o'clock the following morning, the private high-risk suite on the fifth floor of La Paz Hospital had been transformed into an executive war room.

Four temporary desks had been brought in, covered in high-powered laptops, stacks of legal documents, and steaming cups of coffee. Naomi Becker sat at the center table, flanked by two senior forensic accountants from Madrid’s premier audit firm. Marta Sanz stood by the window, managing an endless stream of incoming phone calls on two separate encrypted mobile phones.

Elena sat upright in her hospital bed, dressed in a comfortable silk robe, an IV line still running into her left hand while a portable fetal monitor continuously tracked her baby’s heartbeat. Despite her pale skin, her posture was regal, her eyes sharp as she reviewed a twenty-page financial dossier.

"The news cycle is blowing up, Elena," Marta reported, turning away from the window with a tablet in her hand. "El País, El Mundo, and ABC have all picked up the story. The headlines are calling it 'The Gala of Shame.' The video recorded by one of the catering staff showing Alejandro pushing you has gone viral across social media. It already has over two million views."

Elena didn't look up from her papers. "How is the company’s stock responding?"

"Valcárcel Industrial shares dropped eight percent at the opening bell on the Madrid Stock Exchange," Naomi answered, sliding a real-time market report across the bed. "The board of directors is panicking. They have called an emergency board meeting for two o'clock this afternoon at the corporate headquarters on Paseo de la Castellana."

"Who is currently chairing the board in my absence?" Elena asked, her voice calm and calculated.

"Gonzalo Rivas," Naomi replied with a grim tone. "He was your late father-in-law’s vice chairman, but over the last six months, he has been quietly bought off by Alejandro. Rivas holds eight percent of the voting stock, and he is planning to propose a motion at two o'clock to appoint an interim administrative receiver—specifically, himself—claiming that you are medically incapacitated due to your pregnancy."

Elena smiled coldly, setting the financial dossier down on her lap. "Gonzalo Rivas... the man whose daughter’s private art gallery in Barcelona was secretly funded by an offshore transfer from Valcárcel Industrial's account in 2024."

Naomi’s eyebrows raised in surprise. "You found that in Gabriel’s private ledger?"

"Page forty-two," Elena said, pointing to a highlighted entry in the dossier. "Alejandro authorized a three-hundred-thousand-euro 'consulting fee' to Rivas’s daughter's shell company in exchange for Rivas voting against Don Gabriel’s restructuring plan last year. Rivas isn't loyal to Alejandro out of friendship; he’s bound to him by shared corruption."

Just then, the heavy oak door opened, and Captain Javier Torres walked in, wearing his formal Guardia Civil uniform, carrying a thick manila folder under his arm.

"Good morning, Señora Valcárcel," Torres said, removing his cap respectfully. "I thought you should hear the latest developments directly from me."

"Did Judge Gutierrez grant bail?" Elena asked immediately.

"He tried to," Torres replied with a wry smile. "Senator Varela arrived at the courthouse at seven AM with two millions euros in collateral. Attorney Ignacio Sterling presented a medical certificate claiming Alejandro was suffering from severe anxiety and requested he be transferred to a private clinic."

"And?" Naomi demanded, stepping forward.

"And then I walked into the judge’s chambers with the forensic financial audit you sent over at five AM," Torres said, tapping the manila folder. "As soon as Judge Gutierrez saw the evidence of the twelve-million-euro pension fraud, along with the wire transfer logs to Panama, the game changed entirely. Embezzlement of that scale carries a mandatory flight risk classification under Spanish law."

Torres leaned against the edge of the desk, looking at Elena with immense satisfaction. "Bail was flatly denied. Alejandro Valcárcel has been remanded to the Soto del Real maximum-security prison without bail pending trial."

A wave of palpable relief swept through the room. Marta let out a loud breath, while Naomi nodded in stern approval.

"Where is Claudia Varela?" Elena asked quietly.

"Her father managed to shield her from the immediate police custody, claiming she was merely an invited guest at the gala," Torres explained. "However, our financial crimes unit served her with a court summons twenty minutes ago. We discovered that two shell accounts in her name received monthly transfers of twenty thousand euros from Valcárcel Industrial's marketing budget. She is officially listed as a co-conspirator in corporate embezzlement."

"Her father won't be able to protect her for long," Naomi added. "Senator Varela’s political opponents are already demanding a ethics committee investigation into his family’s ties to the Valcárcel fraud."

Elena turned her head toward the large glass window, looking out over the skyline of Madrid. The city was glowing under the pale morning sun, vast and alive. For five years, she had lived in the shadow of the Valcárcel family name, enduring Alejandro’s cold neglect, his quiet insults, and his endless attempts to make her feel small, unworthy, and dependent.

Now, the balance of power had shifted forever.

"Naomi," Elena said, turning back to her team, her dark eyes flashing with absolute authority. "Prepare my release papers. I am leaving this hospital."

Dr. Ramos, who had just stepped into the room to check her vitals, immediately threw his hands up in protest. "Absolutely not, Elena! You had uterine contractions less than twelve hours ago! You need at least three days of complete bed rest!"

"I don't have three days, Mateo," Elena said gently, looking at her doctor with deep gratitude. "Gonzalo Rivas is holding an emergency board meeting at two o'clock to steal my daughter's inheritance. If I am not in that boardroom, they will take advantage of my absence to destroy everything Don Gabriel built."

"Elena, it is too dangerous for the baby—" Dr. Ramos began.

"You can come with me," Elena interrupted smoothly. "Bring a portable monitor, bring a nurse, bring a wheelchair if you must. But at two o'clock today, I am walking into the corporate headquarters of Valcárcel Industrial as the majority shareholder."

Dr. Ramos looked into Elena's eyes, seeing the immovable resolve of a mother fighting for her child. He let out a heavy sigh, running a hand through his hair.

"If your blood pressure spikes above one-forty, I am halting the meeting and bringing you straight back here," Dr. Ramos warned sternly. "Understood?"

"Understood," Elena smiled softly. She turned to Marta. "Marta, call my stylist. I need my sharpest maternity suit—the navy blue silk one. And call the media team. I want a press conference scheduled on the front steps of Castellana 115 at one-forty-five PM."

Elena placed her hand over her abdomen, feeling another firm, reassuring kick from inside.

"It's time to clean house," Elena whispered.
