Chapter 6 - The Poison in the Well

Two weeks had passed since the boardroom coup at Castellana 115. The Spanish news media had transformed Elena Valcárcel into a national icon—a symbol of strength, dignity, and maternal resilience who had saved a storied Spanish institution from corporate vultures.
Under Elena’s swift leadership, Valcárcel Industrial’s stock had bounced back, surging twelve percent after she announced a comprehensive restructuring plan that fully restored the stolen twelve million euros to the employee pension fund out of Alejandro's seized personal assets.
However, three miles away, inside the cold, whitewashed visiting room of Soto del Real prison, Alejandro Valcárcel was losing his mind.
He sat behind a thick pane of bulletproof glass, wearing a grey prison jumpsuit. His unwashed hair was matted, dark circles hollowed his eyes, and his hands were constantly twitching with nervous rage.
On the other side of the glass sat Ignacio Sterling, his high-priced defense attorney, looking thoroughly exhausted.
"What do you mean the motion for bail was denied again?" Alejandro screamed into the plastic phone receiver, his voice cracking with hysteria. "My father's senator friend, Varela—why isn't he pulling strings with the Ministry of Justice?"
Sterling let out a weary sigh, rubbing his temples. "Senator Varela is currently under federal investigation himself, Alejandro. The media uncovered his daughter Claudia's shell accounts. If Varela so much as breathes near a judge on your behalf, he will be indicted by the Supreme Court before nightfall. You are radioactive. Nobody in Madrid will touch you."
"I am a Valcárcel!" Alejandro roared, slamming his fist against the bulletproof glass, causing a nearby prison guard to rest his hand on his baton. "That woman... that peasant my father forced me to marry... she is living in my house! She is sitting in my office! She is spending my money!"
"It isn't your money, Alejandro," Sterling said flatly, pulling a thick legal document from his briefcase. "The court has finalized the forensic audit. Every asset you owned—your sports cars, your private villa in Marbella, your offshore accounts—has been permanently frozen under the Anti-Corruption Act. If you go to trial on these evidence files, you are facing a minimum of twenty-five years in prison."
Alejandro’s eyes narrowed into dark, murderous slits. "Then we don't let it go to trial."
Sterling frowned. "What are you talking about?"
Alejandro leaned close to the glass, his breath fogging up the surface. "Elena is thirty-six weeks pregnant. She is weak. She is living at Villa Valcárcel with only a handful of servants and private security. If something... unfortunate... happens to her before she gives birth, the trust will fall into legal limbo. As her legal husband, under Spanish marital law, my lawyers can file for emergency custody of the estate assets on behalf of the unborn child's estate."
Sterling stared at Alejandro in absolute horror, pulling back from the glass. "Alejandro... are you insane? Are you suggesting what I think you're suggesting?"
"I am suggesting that everyone has a price, Sterling," Alejandro whispered, his voice dripping with venomous desperation. "My old fraternity brother, Lucas Delgado—he runs a private security firm in Seville. He has contacts in the criminal underworld. Find him. Tell him I will give him three million euros from my hidden secondary account in the Cayman Islands... the one the forensic auditors haven't found yet."
"I will not be an accomplice to murder, Alejandro!" Sterling said, rising from his chair, his face pale with disgust. "I am your legal counsel, not an assassin! If you attempt anything like this, I will immediately withdraw from your defense!"
"You won't withdraw, Sterling," Alejandro sneered, a terrifying, manic smile spreading across his face. "Because I have the receipts for the illegal offshore tax havens you set up for my father ten years ago. If I go down for twenty-five years, I am taking you, your firm, and half the Ministry of Justice down with me!"
Sterling froze, his hand trembling on his briefcase handle. He looked at the psychotic man behind the glass, realizing too late that he had made a deal with a monster.
Meanwhile, back at Villa Valcárcel, the afternoon sun was bathing the estate's private gardens in a warm, golden light.
Elena walked slowly along the stone path, surrounded by blooming white roses. She was accompanied by Marta Sanz and two new, highly trained private security officers provided by an elite security firm that Naomi had vetted personally.
Dr. Ramos walked beside her, carrying a portable medical kit, monitoring her steady, relaxed gait.
"Your blood pressure is one-ten over seventy, Elena," Dr. Ramos said with a pleased smile, looking at his gauge. "Your body is recovering beautifully. If we can keep you stress-free for two more weeks, you will carry this baby to full term without any further complications."
"I feel peaceful here, Mateo," Elena said, stopping beside a stone fountain, looking at the grand mansion that had once felt like a golden prison. "For the first time in five years, this house feels like a home, not a battleground."
Marta smiled warmly, holding a tray with a glass of fresh orange juice. "The staff are overjoyed, Señora. Without Alejandro's shouting and cruelty, Villa Valcárcel is finally at peace. We are currently preparing the nursery on the second floor. We painted the walls soft pink and cream, just as you requested."
Elena touched her belly, feeling a sweet, gentle movement inside. "Thank you, Marta. For everything. You stood by me when everyone else in that ballroom was afraid to speak."
"Don Gabriel paid me to manage his house, Señora," Marta said softly, her eyes shining with tears. "But he loved you like a daughter. Serving you is an honor."
Suddenly, Marta's encrypted mobile phone rang. She stepped away to answer it, her smile quickly fading as she listened to the voice on the other end.
Elena noticed the change in Marta's expression immediately. "Marta? What is it?"
Marta walked back, her face pale, holding the phone out to Elena. "It's Naomi... she’s at the High Court in Madrid. Something has happened."
Elena took the phone, bringing it to her ear. "Naomi?"
"Elena, listen to me very carefully," Naomi's voice came through, fast and urgent. "Ignacio Sterling just walked into the State Prosecutor's office twenty minutes ago. He surrendered his legal license and signed a full confession under the Whistleblower Protection Act."
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. "Why? What did Sterling confess?"
"Alejandro tried to hire an armed hit squad through a criminal contact in Seville," Naomi revealed, her voice shaking with rage. "He offered three million euros from an undisclosed Cayman account to orchestrate an attack on Villa Valcárcel tonight. He wanted to eliminate you before the trial."
Elena’s hand tightened around the phone. She looked over at the peaceful roses, at the security guards standing by the gate, feeling a cold shiver run down her spine.
"Is the attack still happening?" Elena asked, her voice turning to steel.
"No," Naomi replied triumphantly. "Captain Torres and the Special Operations Group of the Guardia Civil intercepted Lucas Delgado and his men two hours ago in an underground garage in Madrid. They caught them with illegal firearms, tactical gear, and the transfer confirmation from Alejandro's Cayman account."
Naomi took a deep breath. "It’s over, Elena. Alejandro just committed attempted murder-for-hire from inside a maximum-security prison. He will spend the rest of his natural life behind bars. He is never, ever coming out."
Elena closed her eyes, letting out a long, quiet breath that seemed to carry away the final remnants of pain, fear, and betrayal that had weighed on her soul for years.
She looked up at the blue Spanish sky, feeling the warm sunshine on her face, feeling her daughter’s kick against her palm.
"Thank you, Naomi," Elena whispered. "Tell Captain Torres... he has our eternal gratitude."
Elena hung up the phone. She looked at Dr. Ramos and Marta, who were watching her with anxious eyes.
"Is everything alright, Elena?" Dr. Ramos asked nervously.
May you like
Elena smiled—a radiant, beautiful, completely unburdened smile that illuminated her whole face.
"Everything is perfect, Mateo," Elena said gently, taking a step toward the mansion. "Let's go see the nursery."
