Chapter 3 - The Gaslight Games

The next forty-eight hours were a masterclass in psychological warfare. Rosemary moved into her own home, turning her study into a war room. She had the documents from the blue box scanned, encrypted, and sent to a contact in the district attorney’s office—a favor owed from her years in family court.

On Monday morning, Derek and Evelyn arrived at Rosemary’s house unannounced. They were putting on a show, playing the roles of the "devoted, concerned family members."

"We've been talking to a specialist," Derek said, his voice brimming with manufactured empathy. He held out a folder, likely more forged documents. "Gianna’s episodes are becoming dangerous, Rosemary. We think a voluntary commitment—for her own good—is the next logical step. It would keep the family business out of the courts."

Rosemary sat across from them, sipping tea that tasted like ash in her mouth. She listened as they spun a web of lies: Gianna’s "fits of rage," her "documented neglect," and the "need" for Hazel to remain in a controlled environment.

"You’re very concerned about the family business, Derek," Rosemary said, her voice soft. "Is that what this is really about? The assets?"

Evelyn laughed, a brittle, sharp sound. "Don't be dramatic, Rosemary. We are protecting our own. If you fight us on this, we have plenty of witnesses who will testify to Gianna’s condition. Nurses, neighbors… people who saw her 'fall'."

Rosemary felt a chill run down her spine. They had already turned the community against her daughter. They had built a wall of false testimony so high that the truth looked like a crack in the foundation.

"I see," Rosemary said, locking eyes with Derek. "So, you’re suggesting I abandon my own daughter?"

"We're suggesting you be realistic," Derek countered. "You have a reputation to maintain. Don't ruin it for a sinking ship."

He thought he was threatening her. He didn't realize he had just given her the final piece of the puzzle: he was afraid of the truth coming out, and he was using their social standing to bury it.
