Chapter 7 - The Paper Trail

The legal battle commenced with a speed that left Derek reeling. The courtroom was a battlefield of nerves and paper. Rosemary sat at the table, her posture rigid, her eyes sharp.
Derek and Evelyn were there, looking uncharacteristically disheveled. They had hired high-priced defense counsel, but the evidence was overwhelming. The forged signature on the power of attorney was cross-referenced by a forensic document expert who found the ink chemistry didn't match the pens available in the hospital at the time of the signing.
The hospital administrator, Sarah, was called to the stand. Under intense questioning from Marcus, the facade of the "clerical error" crumbled.
"Who authorized the access to the medical records?" Marcus asked, pointing at the projection of the log files.
Sarah trembled, her gaze shifting to Evelyn. "I... I was instructed. I was told it was a standard procedure for a private family matter."
The gasps in the courtroom were audible. The judge hammered the gavel, her face stern. "Counsel, explain the nature of this 'private matter'."
Derek stood up, his face flushed with panic. "Your Honor, this is a misunderstanding. Rosemary is using her connections to manipulate the proceedings."

"I am using the truth, Derek," Rosemary stood, her voice resonating through the chamber. "And the truth doesn't need to be manipulated. It only needs to be heard."
She held up the blue box, the very evidence they thought would destroy her. Now, it was the anchor dragging them down into the depths of their own greed.
