Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The house felt like a mausoleum. For Hazel, the past few days had been a blur of hushed arguments and locked doors. Rosemary knew she couldn’t wait for the wheels of justice to turn; the bureaucracy was too slow, and Derek’s influence was too deep.

Under the guise of checking in on the house, Rosemary used her remaining spare key to slip in during the late hours of Tuesday. The house was silent, save for the rhythmic, unsettling ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. She crept to Hazel’s room, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She found the little girl curled into a ball on her bed, clutching a tattered blanket. She wasn't sleeping; she was staring at the ceiling, her eyes wide with a fear no six-year-old should ever know.

"Hazel," Rosemary whispered, kneeling by the bed.

The girl gasped, but when she saw her grandmother’s face, a sob broke from her lips. Rosemary didn't comfort her with empty promises; she took action. She gathered a few essentials, her eyes scanning the shadows for movement.

"We're going on an adventure, sweetheart," Rosemary murmured, wrapping Hazel in a heavy coat. "Just you and me."

As they reached the front door, the floorboard creaked. Evelyn appeared at the top of the stairs, her robe billowing like the wings of a predatory bird. Her face was twisted in rage.

"Going somewhere, Rosemary?" Evelyn’s voice cut through the darkness.

Rosemary didn't look up. She kept her grip tight on Hazel’s hand. "I’m taking my granddaughter home, Evelyn. And you and Derek are going to be very busy explaining everything to the police by morning."

Derek emerged from the shadows of the study, his face pale with fury. "You have no legal right to remove her. I’ll have you arrested for kidnapping!"

"Try it," Rosemary said, her voice cold and lethal. She stepped out into the night air, the cool breeze hitting her face like a baptism. The rescue had begun.
