Chapter 9 - The Day of Reckoning

The trial reached its crescendo on a rain-slicked Thursday. The final piece of evidence was the voice recording Rosemary had captured—the one of Derek explicitly detailing how they would gaslight Gianna into a permanent psychiatric facility.
As the audio played over the speakers, the silence in the room was absolute. Even the jury members looked away, unable to stomach the casual coldness in Derek’s voice. Gianna, who had been sitting beside her mother with her head held high, finally let a single tear roll down her cheek. It wasn't a tear of pain, but of release.
When it was Rosemary's turn to testify, she didn't focus on the abuse. She focused on the future. She spoke about the love she had for her daughter and the necessity of protecting the vulnerable from those who wear masks of nobility.

"They didn't just try to take my daughter’s life," Rosemary told the court, her voice clear and resonant. "They tried to take her soul. They tried to turn her motherhood into a cage. But they forgot one thing: a mother’s reach extends far beyond any box they can build."
The jury deliberated for less than three hours. When they returned, the verdict was unanimous. Guilty on all counts: kidnapping, conspiracy to commit fraud, falsifying medical records, and domestic abuse. As the shackles were placed on Derek and Evelyn, they didn't look at each other. They looked at the floor, the weight of their own treachery finally pinning them down.
