Chapter 3 - The Departure

"You can't do this!" Brandon shouted, his voice cracking with panic as Marcus stepped into the entryway, effectively blocking the rest of the house. "This is my home! You're trespassing, Vance!"

"It was your home," Arthur said smoothly, holding my trembling frame against his side. "Five minutes ago, it was your home. Now, it's a crime scene."

Brandon turned pale. He looked at me, his eyes pleading, searching for the submissive woman who had spent three years making excuses for his explosive temper. "Rachel, tell him! Tell your father it was an accident! You know how worked up you get when you're pregnant. Tell him!"

I looked at Brandon—really looked at him. The handsome college athlete I had fallen for had dissolved into a desperate, cowardly monster.

"It wasn't an accident," I said, my voice slurred but firm. "He hit me, Dad. He hit me while I was holding Lily."

Arthur's eyes burned with a dark, lethal fire. He didn't raise his fist. He didn't shout. Men like Arthur Vance didn't need to yell to destroy a life.

"Get in the car, sweetheart," Arthur murmured to me, ushering me out toward the long black SUV idling in the driveway. "Your nightmare ends tonight."

As Marcus stepped between Brandon and the front door, Brandon lunged forward, trying to grab my shoulder. "Rachel! You take one step out that door and we are done! Do you hear me? You won't get a dime from me!"

I stopped on the top step, turned my head slowly, and looked back over my shoulder.

"I don't want your money, Brandon. I have my own. And starting tonight, you're going to need every penny you have just to pay for a lawyer."

I walked down the steps into the cool night, carrying my daughter and my pride, leaving the bloody blue living room behind forever.
