Chapter 9 - The Downfall

Judge Evelyn Vance reviewed the footage, her face turning into a mask of pure steel. She slammed her pen onto her desk.

"I have seen enough," the judge declared, her voice filled with absolute disdain. "Mr. Miller, your request for visitation is denied in its entirety. I am issuing a comprehensive, permanent order of protection. You are to remain no less than one thousand yards away from Rachel Vance, her children, and any property owned by the Vance family."

Before Brandon could even stand up, two uniformed police officers stepped through the double doors at the back of the courtroom.

"Brandon Miller?" one officer called out, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.

"What is this?!" Brandon panicked, backing away toward his lawyer. "What are you doing?!"

"You are under arrest for felony aggravated assault family violence, as well as grand larceny and corporate fraud," the officer announced loudly, pinning Brandon’s arms behind his back.

The metal clicked shut around his wrists.

Brandon began to thrash around, panic overtaking his composure. "Rachel! Tell them to stop! Rachel, please! I love you! Think about Lily! Think about the baby!"

I stood up, walked over to the wooden railing separating the gallery from the defense table, and looked down at him as the officers pulled him toward the side exit.

"I am thinking about them, Brandon," I said clearly so the court reporters could hear every word. "That’s why you're never going to see any of us again."
