Chapter 7 - The Hidden Truth

As Victoria's team began digging into Brandon's financials for the divorce proceedings, they uncovered something far worse than simple domestic violence.

Brandon hadn't just been losing his temper; he had been drowning in secret debt.

"Take a look at this," Victoria said, sliding a folder across the desk two days later.

I flipped through bank statements and wire transfers. Over the last eighteen months, Brandon had secretly drained our joint savings account, maxed out three credit cards in my name, and taken out a massive bridge loan against our house.

"Where did the money go?" I asked, bewildered. "He told me he was making good money at his consulting firm."

"He was fired six months ago, Rachel," Victoria revealed. "He's been living off credit and gambling on high-risk offshore crypto accounts. But that’s not all. Look at the corporate wires."

I scanned down to a recent transfer of fifty thousand dollars into Brandon’s personal account. The originating entity was Croft Global Enterprise.

My blood ran cold. "Harrison Croft?"

"Your father's biggest business rival," Arthur said, stepping out from the corner of the room. "Croft has been trying to sabotage our renewable energy merger for two years. He couldn't beat me in the boardroom, so he bought my son-in-law."

Brandon hadn't just been an abusive husband. He had been selling confidential Vance family information and financial secrets to my father's worst enemy in exchange for cash to cover his gambling debts.

The hit he gave me that night wasn't just about Lily crying; it was the wild, desperate lash-out of a trapped rat whose entire fake life was about to collapse.
