Chapter 2 - The Digital Mirage

The drive home felt like a hallucination. The city skyline, usually a reassuring backdrop to my life, now looked like a hostile fortress. Lily was asleep in the backseat, her breathing steady and rhythmic, a stark contrast to the chaotic thunder in my chest. Every street lamp we passed threw shadows across my face, mimicking the fracture in my reality.

When we reached our house, the suburban sanctuary I had curated, I felt an irrational surge of relief. It was still there—the rosebushes, the porch light, the familiar creak of the floorboards. But as I unlocked the front door, the air inside felt stale, as if the house had been holding its breath waiting for me to realize it was no longer mine.

I rushed to my home office. My fingers danced frantically over the keyboard, my pulse echoing in my ears. I pulled up the tax returns, the property deeds, the cloud-synced photo albums. Everything was there—or so I thought.

I clicked on a wedding photo from our anniversary trip to Tuscany. The image loaded, but as I squinted at it, the blood drained from my face. Julian was there, handsome as ever, but the woman standing next to him—the woman I knew was me—had been replaced. A digital artifact, a seamless splice. Someone had spent thousands of hours surgically removing me from every frame of our existence and layering this stranger over my life.

My phone buzzed. An unknown number.

"Don't bother looking for proof, Sarah," a distorted, synthesized voice whispered through the speaker. "The records are gone. The digital footprint you think you have is a trap. You don't exist, and if you keep digging, you’ll find that you might never have existed at all."

"Who are you?" I demanded, my voice cracking. "What did you do to my husband?"

May you like

"Julian didn't have anything done to him," the voice replied, cold and detached. "He chose this. Every bit of it."

The line went dead. I sat in the darkness, the glow of the screen illuminating my trembling hands. This wasn't just a betrayal; it was a total systemic overwrite.
