Chapter 5 - The Masquerade of Truth

The charity masquerade at the botanical gardens was the perfect hunting ground. Hundreds of faces hidden behind ornate silk and gold filigree, masks that provided the anonymity I needed to move through the crowd like a whisper. I wasn't there as a wife; I was a phantom returning to claim the debt.
Clara’s tech was subtle—a tiny pulse-jamming device that would temporarily destabilize the facial recognition security scanners Julian had installed throughout the venue. As long as I stayed within the shadows of the exotic ferns, I was invisible to his automated guards.
I saw them across the promenade. Julian looked regal in a charcoal tuxedo, his hand resting on the small of Elena’s back. She wore a gown of midnight blue, adorned with the very same sapphire necklace I had been given for our fifth anniversary. Seeing it on her neck felt like a physical blow, a branding iron pressing against my own skin.
"Focus," I whispered to myself, clutching the small audio recorder hidden in my palm.
I didn't move to attack. Instead, I moved to isolate. I watched as Elena excused herself to the powder room. This was the opening. I shadowed her, my movements fluid and silent. As she stepped into the opulent, gold-tiled restroom, I followed, locking the door behind me.

She spun around, her eyes wide behind her venetian mask. She didn't scream; she gasped, a sound of pure, unadulterated terror. "You," she breathed. "You're the one from the gala."
"I am," I said, stepping into the light, removing my own mask to reveal the face she had been impersonating for years. "And it’s time you told me exactly who is pulling the strings."
