Chapter 9 - The Siege

The gala dissolved into a scene of chaotic theater. Julian, realizing the tide had turned, attempted to flee through the service entrance, but he was intercepted. Not by the police, but by the very shareholders he had swindled. They didn't want justice; they wanted blood.
I watched from the balcony as the man I once thought I knew was confronted by the reality of his own ambition. He looked small, pathetic, and entirely hollow. He had sold his soul to maintain a brand, and now, the brand was bankrupt.
Elena stood by my side, her eyes dry and sharp. She had finally shed the armor of the 'perfect wife.' "What happens now?" she asked.

"Now," I said, looking toward the exit where I knew my daughter was waiting in the safety of my sister's care, "we rebuild. We expose the rot at the root of the entire system. Julian was just the loudest symptom of the disease. There are others."
The police finally arrived, the sirens cutting through the night like a serrated blade. As they cuffed Julian, he looked up at the balcony one last time. There was no apology in his eyes, only a cold, lingering hatred. He had blamed me for his downfall, refusing to accept that he had been the one to strike the match that burned his world down. I turned my back on him. The man he was no longer existed for me.
