Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

For the next hour, in the sterile silence of that room, Elena poured out the entire sordid history. She recounted the shell companies, the hush-money payments to corrupt officials, and the specific software engineers responsible for the digital scrubbing of my identity. It was a roadmap to his ruin.
As she finished, the bathroom door rattled. A security guard was patrolling, checking the facilities.
"We need to move," I hissed.
We exited through the service corridor, blending into the caterers' flow. As we reached the periphery of the garden, I saw Julian standing near the stage. He was being introduced for his keynote speech. He stood tall, the image of the invincible leader.
"He's going to lie to them," Elena said, her voice filled with newfound venom. "He's going to talk about 'family values' while he stands on a platform built over our corpses."
"Not tonight," I replied.
I handed my phone to Clara, who was waiting in the shadows of the catering van. She took the file, her fingers flying over her tablet as she prepared to broadcast the audio and documents directly into the venue’s main projection system, overriding the keynote slides.
The music swelled, a fanfare for the hero. Julian stepped to the microphone, his smile bright and predatory.
"Tonight is about legacy," he began, his voice booming through the speakers. "About the people who stand by us when the world gets dark."
I watched as the giant screen behind him flickered. The PowerPoint presentation vanished, replaced by a live feed of the financial ledgers, the redacted birth certificates, and finally, the audio of Elena’s confession echoing through the hall.

The silence that followed was heavy, absolute, and utterly lethal. Julian’s face went white. He froze, his mouth still open, his eyes darting toward the crowd.
The masquerade was over. Reality had arrived.
