Chapter 6 - The Pawn’s Burden

Elena collapsed onto the velvet bench, her composure shattering like dropped crystal. The makeup, the high-fashion, the poise—it all fell away to reveal a woman with hollow eyes and trembling lips.
"I didn't choose this," she sobbed, her voice low and frantic. "They found me when I was at my lowest. They had pictures of my family, threats against my sister. They told me I just had to step into your shoes, keep the house clean, look the part, and never, ever ask what happened to the woman who came before."
"Who is 'they'?" I gripped her shoulders, forcing her to look at me.
"The board," she whispered. "Julian isn't the architect, Sarah. He’s the frontman. The company was failing three years ago. They needed a narrative of stability, of a man with a perfect family. When you… when you disappeared, they didn't report it. They replaced you. They used deep-fake technology and a contract of silence to build a brand out of a lie."
My heart went cold. I wasn't just fighting a husband; I was fighting a corporate machine that treated human lives as disposable assets.
"Julian knows," I said, a statement of fact.

"He does," she nodded, tears smearing her elaborate eyeliner. "He was failing, and he was terrified of losing the lifestyle. They offered him a choice: lose everything, or play the game. He chose the game. And he chose me to be his co-star."
I realized then that Elena was a victim, just like me. But she was a victim who possessed the key to his destruction. I pulled out my phone and activated the recording. "Tell me everything," I said, my voice steady. "Every detail, every name, every transaction. If you want out of this prison, this is your only path."
