Chapter 5 - Whispers of Treason

Time seemed to fracture into razor-sharp fragments.
Hannah’s mind raced through a dozen desperate options, but every exit was blocked by the barrel of the intruder’s silenced weapon. The guards outside the door were either dead or incapacitated—otherwise, this man wouldn't have made it past the threshold.
"I said, hand him over!" the intruder snapped, taking two aggressive steps forward, the rubber soles of his tactical boots squeaking slightly against the polished wood floor.
Panic threatened to drown Hannah, but a fierce, maternal survival instinct overrode her terror. This wasn't her child by blood, but he was hers by survival, by every tear she had shed over his cradle. She would rather die than let this monster touch a hair on Leo’s head.
She gripped Leo tighter, her knuckles turning white, and prepared to throw herself between the gunman and the crib.
Before the intruder could take another step, the shadows behind him exploded into motion.
A towering, dark figure dropped silently from the ceiling access panel—a hidden tactical hatch Lorenzo had installed for emergency extractions.
It was Lorenzo Rossi.
He didn't shout a warning. He didn't hesitate. In one fluid, brutal movement, Lorenzo lunged forward, wrapping a heavy steel garwire around the intruder's throat and jerking him violently backward.
The gunman choked out a desperate, strangled gasp, dropping his weapon as his hands clawed frantically at the wire digging into his windpipe.
Lorenzo slammed the man’s head against the marble fireplace hearth with a sickening crunch. The intruder went limp instantly, slumping into a motionless heap on the Persian rug.
For three terrifying seconds, the only sound in the nursery was the heavy, ragged breathing of Lorenzo Rossi.
He stood over the body, his dark hair disheveled, his expensive dress shirt stained with sweat and a smear of blood across the collar. Slowly, he looked up, his dark eyes locking onto Hannah, who was trembling violently in the corner, still shielding Leo in her arms.
"Are you hurt?" Lorenzo demanded, his voice a low, gravelly snarl as he crossed the room in two long strides.
"N-no," Hannah stammered, tears streaming down her face. "We're... we're okay. Oh God, Lorenzo—there are men inside the house—"
"I know," Lorenzo interrupted, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He pulled out a secure military-grade radio from his belt. "Marcus, sweep the east wing. Secure the perimeter. Anyone wearing black doesn't leave this estate breathing."
"Copy that, boss," a gruff voice crackled back through the static.
Lorenzo stepped closer to Hannah, his imposing frame shielding her from the body on the floor. His large, steady hand reached out, gently cupping her chin and forcing her to look up at him. His touch was surprisingly gentle, a stark contrast to the lethal violence that had just unfolded seconds ago.
"You did good," Lorenzo murmured, his voice softening just a fraction. "You didn't scream. You protected him."
"They... they got past the guards," Hannah whispered, her lower lip trembling. "How did they get inside? This house is supposed to be a fortress."
Lorenzo’s eyes darkened into an abyss of pure, unadulterated fury. He dropped his hand from her chin, turning his gaze back toward the fallen intruder.
"They got inside," Lorenzo said slowly, the words dripping with ice, "because someone on my inner security detail gave them the security codes. Someone inside this house wants my son dead."
May you like
Hannah gasped, looking down at sleeping Leo, then back at the billionaire. "You mean... there’s a traitor?"
"Not just a traitor," Lorenzo said, walking over to the window and staring out into the raging storm. "An architect of my family's destruction. The same person who planted the bomb that killed my wife... is trying to finish the job tonight."
