Chapter 8 - Blood on the Estate Gates

"Step away from the crib, Julian."
The voice cut through the nursery like a razor-sharp blade.
Lorenzo Rossi stood in the doorway. He hadn't knocked. He had been monitoring the nursery’s internal closed-circuit cameras from his ground-floor command center, watching every second of the confrontation unfold on high-definition screens.
Dr. Halloran turned around slowly, his hands trembling violently as he faced the mob boss. The polished, dignified pediatrician was completely gone, replaced by a cornered rat realizing there was no escape.
"Mr... Mr. Rossi," Dr. Halloran stammered, his voice cracking. "It's... it's a misunderstanding. The chemical balance in that batch of supplements—"
"Shut your mouth," Lorenzo whispered.
He didn't yell. His voice was terrifyingly calm, carrying the dead, flat weight of an executioner pronouncing sentence.
Lorenzo walked into the room, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the pediatrician. Two armed guards stepped in behind him, sealing the doorway with absolute finality.
"You were my wife's physician," Lorenzo said, stopping three feet away from the doctor. "You delivered my son. I trusted you with the health of my entire family. And all the while... Silas Marchetti was paying you to systematically weaken my bloodline from the inside out."
Dr. Halloran swallowed hard, sweat beading on his forehead. "Silas... Silas offered me a way out. He said the Rossi empire was crumbling, that you were a dead man walking—"
Before the doctor could finish his sentence, Lorenzo moved with terrifying, blinding speed.
He lunged forward, grabbing Dr. Halloran by the throat and slamming him against the heavy oak bookshelf with a force that rattled every book on the shelves.
"You poisoned my wife's vehicle tracking system," Lorenzo snarled, his face inches from the terrified doctor’s, veins bulging in his neck. "You supplied the chemical compound that disabled her brakes before the bomb went off. And you tried to finish off my son while he slept in his crib."
"Please, Lorenzo—mercy—" Dr. Halloran choked out, clawing frantically at the billionaire's iron grip.
"Mercy died the day my wife and daughter burned," Lorenzo hissed.
He didn't kill him in the nursery—not with Leo sleeping in the corner, not in front of Hannah. With a flick of his wrist, Lorenzo hurled the doctor across the room into the arms of the waiting guards.
"Take him down to the basement vault," Lorenzo commanded, his voice dripping with venom. "Chain him to the wall. Let him think about what he's done until I have time to carve the truth out of him piece by piece."
"Yes, Boss," the guards grunted, dragging the screaming, weeping doctor out of the room.
The heavy oak door slammed shut.
Silence descended upon the nursery once again.
Hannah stood by the crib, her chest heaving, staring at the spot where the doctor had stood. The adrenaline was slowly ebbing away, leaving her limbs shaking and her knees weak.
Lorenzo turned around, walking slowly toward her. His expression was a dark, brooding storm, but as he stopped in front of her, his dark eyes softened with an intensity that took her breath away.
"Are you alright?" he asked quietly, his hand hovering near her shoulder as if afraid she might shatter if he touched her too hard.
"I... I think so," Hannah whispered, looking up at him. "He was going to kill him, Lorenzo. If I hadn't looked at the bottle..."
"You saved him," Lorenzo interrupted, his voice thick with emotion. He reached out, gently pulling her into his arms, resting her head against his chest. "Again. You saved my son's life for the second time in a week."
May you like
Hannah buried her face in his tactical shirt, breathing in the scent of cedar, gun oil, and rain. For the first time since she had walked into the mansion, she didn't feel like a prisoner in a golden cage.
She felt safe.
