Chapter 9 - The Mastermind Unmasked

By midnight, the basement vault had done its work.
Dr. Julian Halloran had broken under the relentless, surgical interrogation of Lorenzo’s enforcers. He hadn't just confessed to his own treason; he had surrendered the master encryption keys to Silas Marchetti’s underground financial network, detailing every offshore account, every safe house, and every remaining conspirator hidden within the city's political and legal infrastructure.
In the penthouse office on the top floor of the Rossi Tower in Manhattan, Lorenzo stood before a floor-to-ceiling map of the city, illuminated by the city lights below.
Behind him, Marcus—his chief enforcer—clicked off a secure satellite phone.
"It's done, Boss," Marcus reported, his face grim. "Marchetti’s primary warehouses in Brooklyn and Queens have been seized by federal authorities using the financial data Halloran provided. Silas tried to flee to his private airstrip in New Jersey, but our intercept team cut him off at the toll plaza. He's currently in transit to the basement vault."
Lorenzo didn't turn around. He stared at the glowing lights of the skyline, his hands resting flat against the mahogany desk.
"And the judge in Albany?" Lorenzo asked coldly.
"Judge Henderson—Derek’s uncle," Marcus nodded. "His bank records showed a direct deposit from Marchetti’s shell company matching the exact date Derek was released on bail. Federal marshals picked him up at his chambers an hour ago. He's been suspended from the bench pending an indictment for corruption and obstruction of justice."
A dark, humorless smile touched the corner of Lorenzo’s lips.
"Good," Lorenzo said softly. "Make sure Derek gets a front-row seat to watch his uncle's empire collapse."
He turned away from the window, grabbing his heavy wool coat from the back of his chair. "I'm heading back to the estate. Call Dr. Halloran's emergency replacement—I want a new pediatric team inside the master wing by dawn. No exceptions."
"Understood, Boss," Marcus said, hesitating for a second before speaking again. "Er... Boss? About Miss Hayes... what happens now that the threat is neutralized? Now that the traitor is caught?"
Lorenzo paused, his hand resting on the brass handle of the office door.
For the past three weeks, Hannah Hayes had been a tactical necessity—a wet nurse kept under armed guard to save his son's life. But over the last few days, watching her courage in the face of an assassin, her fierce maternal love for a child that wasn't hers, and the quiet resilience of her soul, something inside the ruthless mafia kingpin had fundamentally shifted.
"She stays," Lorenzo said quietly.

"Stays, sir?" Marcus blinked, surprised. "As a wet nurse?"
"No," Lorenzo replied, opening the door and stepping out into the private elevator. "As the mistress of this house. And God help anyone who ever tries to make her leave."
