Chapter 10 - Dawn on the Atlantic

Two months later, the Rossi estate looked entirely different.

The iron gates were still secure, and the armed security was still vigilant, but the oppressive, tomb-like shadow that had choked the mansion since Sophia’s death had finally lifted.

The sound of soft laughter and light footsteps echoed down the grand marble hallway.

Hannah walked out onto the sunlit rear patio, holding a chubby, giggling four-month-old Leo in her arms. The baby was dressed in a soft blue cotton romper, his bright, dark eyes—so strikingly like his father's—wide with curiosity as he reached out to grab a stray petal blowing in the ocean breeze.

The Atlantic stretched out before them, endless and glittering under a brilliant morning sun.

Footsteps sounded on the stone paving behind her.

Strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist, pulling her back against a warm, solid chest. A heavy chin rested softly on her shoulder, and a pair of lips brushed against her temple.

"He's getting heavy," Lorenzo murmured, his deep voice rich with quiet amusement as he nuzzled her neck.

"He's growing," Hannah smiled, leaning back against him with complete, unhesitating trust. "Dr. Halloran's replacement says he's in the ninety-ninth percentile for weight and development. He's practically a little tank."

Lorenzo chuckled, sliding his hands down to gently support Leo, who immediately reached up with both tiny hands to grab his father’s dark beard. Lorenzo winced playfully, letting out a dramatic groan that made the baby burst into a fit of high-pitched, delighted giggles.

"Alright, little man," Lorenzo whispered, kissing the top of his son's head. "Go easy on your old man."

He looked up, locking his dark eyes with Hannah’s in the bright morning light. The fierce, terrifying predator who had held a gun to her head just two months ago was entirely gone, replaced by a man who had finally found his way back from the dark.

"Derek’s trial started this morning in Albany," Lorenzo said quietly, his voice turning serious. "His uncle is pleading guilty to avoid a federal maximum sentence. Derek is looking at ten years without parole. No one will ever threaten you again, Hannah. You are completely, permanently safe."

Hannah reached out, placing her hand over Lorenzo’s large, calloused fingers resting against her stomach.

"I know," she whispered, a deep, unshakeable peace settling into her soul for the first time since the night her entire world had fallen apart. "I've known it for a while now."

Lorenzo smiled—a rare, genuine, blinding smile that softened his rugged features entirely. He leaned down, pressing a deep, tender kiss to her lips, tasting of coffee and morning air.

May you like

"Good," Lorenzo whispered against her mouth. "Because I'm never letting you go."

Out on the lawn, the Atlantic waves crashed rhythmically against the cliffs, singing a song of healing, of survival, and of a new dawn rising over a house that had finally learned how to live again.
