Chapter 6 - Scars in the Dark

By 3:00 AM, the blood in the nursery had been scrubbed away, the shattered glass replaced, and a dozen elite mercenaries loyal only to Lorenzo’s personal bloodline were stationed both inside and outside the master wing.

The intruder’s body had vanished into the subterranean levels of the estate, where secrets went to die.

Hannah sat wide awake in the armchair, holding Leo against her chest long after he had drifted back into a deep, untroubled slumber. The adrenaline had faded, leaving behind a hollow, shivering exhaustion that chilled her to the bone.

The nursery door creaked open.

Lorenzo stepped inside. He had changed out of his blood-stained shirt into a simple black tactical turtleneck, his sleeves rolled up to reveal thick, corded forearms crisscrossed with old, faded scars from a lifetime of syndicate warfare. He carried two mugs of steaming black coffee, holding one out toward Hannah as he walked over.

"Drink it," he commanded quietly, setting the mug on the small table beside her when she didn't immediately take it. "You're in shock. It'll help."

Hannah slowly reached out, wrapping her cold fingers around the warm ceramic mug. "Thank you."

Lorenzo didn't sit in the chair opposite her. Instead, he leaned back against the edge of the mahogany dresser, looking down at his son with an expression of profound, crushing exhaustion. The ruthless mafia kingpin mask was gone, replaced by the broken, grieving father underneath.

"You don't belong here, Hannah," Lorenzo said suddenly, his voice barely louder than the hum of the air purifier.

Hannah looked up, surprised. "Are you... are you firing me? Are you sending me away?"

"No," Lorenzo said, shaking his head slowly. "If I send you away, Leo dies within forty-eight hours. What I mean is... you shouldn't have been dragged into my war. You're an innocent girl from upstate who had a quiet life until a monster destroyed it."

A bitter laugh slipped past Hannah’s lips. "My quiet life? Mr. Rossi, my boyfriend threw me down a staircase because he didn't want the baby. I lost my daughter, my home, and my dignity before I ever stepped foot in your mansion. I haven't had a quiet life in years."

Lorenzo turned his dark eyes toward her, studying her face with an intensity that made her breath catch. "Who was he?"

"His name is Derek," Hannah whispered, staring into the dark surface of her coffee. "He thinks he's untouchable because his uncle is a corrupt municipal judge in Albany. When I tried to leave him, he said nobody else would ever want a broken girl like me."

Lorenzo didn't speak for a long time. The silence in the room stretched, heavy and electric, broken only by the steady hum of the medical monitors.

When Lorenzo finally spoke, his voice was a chilling, absolute promise.

"Derek won't ever touch you again, Hannah," he said softly. "By sunrise tomorrow, judge or no judge, your ex-boyfriend will be waking up in a federal penitentiary cell three states away, wondering how his entire existence evaporated."

Hannah looked up, her breath hitching. "You... you don't have to do that."

"I'm not doing it for you," Lorenzo replied, pushing off the dresser and walking toward the door. "I'm doing it because no piece of human trash who hurts a mother and child deserves to draw breath in my city."

Before he stepped out into the hallway, Lorenzo paused, looking back over his shoulder.

"Lock the nursery door, Hannah. And get some sleep. Tomorrow, we start hunting the rat inside my own house."
