Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Serpent

Camila stood frozen in the center of the mahogany study. The folder containing fifty million dollars and her freedom sat between them, a golden key to a life she had spent five years praying for.
She could take her children, fly to Europe, and never look back.
Yet, as she looked at Damon—at the shadows under his eyes, the absolute sincerity in his posture, and the raw vulnerability he was exposing to her—she realized the monster she had built in her mind for five years wasn't standing in front of her.
Standing in front of her was a man breaking under the weight of his own regrets.
Before she could speak, the double doors of the study burst open.
Lev stepped inside, his scarred face grim, his hand resting on the hilt of his concealed firearm. "Boss. We have a problem."
Damon’s posture straightened instantly, the vulnerable father vanishing, replaced in a heartbeat by the ruthless mafia sovereign. "Report."
"Our intelligence network picked up a chatter on the southern docks," Lev said grimly. "Victor Moretti found out."
Camila gasped softly. Victor Moretti. The head of the rival Moretti syndicate—the man who had waged a bloody war against the Volkov family five years ago, the main reason Damon’s life had been constant bloodshed.
"How?" Damon asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous register.
"Richard," Lev spat the name like venom. "Your former logistics manager. He saw the convoy pull up to the Madison Avenue spot three nights ago. He recognized Camila. He sold the information to Moretti for two million dollars."
Damon’s eyes flared with a lethal, terrifying heat. "Where is Richard now?"
"In our holding facility downtown," Lev replied. "Being questioned. But Moretti already knows she’s alive, and he knows about the twins. He’s calling an emergency meeting of the Commission tonight. He’s going to claim you hid heirs to threaten the treaty."
Camila stepped forward, her heart pounding. "Moretti knows about Mateo and Luz?"
Damon turned to her, his expression turning into absolute iron. "He won't touch them. I will burn his entire syndicate to ash before he even breathes in their direction."
"Damon, Moretti is ruthless!" Camila cried out, her old fears rushing back. "He executed his own cousin three years ago! If he thinks the twins are a threat to his power—"
"He won't get the chance," Damon cut her off, stepping around the desk until he was inches from her. He reached out and grabbed both of her hands, squeezing them tight. His grip was warm, solid, and immovable. "Camila. Listen to me. Five years ago, I failed to protect you from the snakes in my own circle. I let you live in fear. I will not fail today."
He looked into her eyes with an intensity that made her breath stop.
"I offered you freedom five minutes ago," Damon said softly. "And I meant it. But until I clear Moretti from the board, you and the children are staying right here under my guard. Do you trust me to keep them safe?"
Camila looked at their joined hands. She remembered the cold pavement of Madison Avenue. She remembered the way Damon had cradled Luz against his chest like she was made of fragile glass. She remembered the way he had bowed his head to Mateo.

Slowly, Camila nodded. "I trust you to protect our children, Damon."
A flash of fierce, profound gratitude filled Damon’s dark eyes. "Lev. Prepare the war room. We are going to end the Moretti syndicate tonight."
