Chapter 9 - Healing the Broken Glass

A week after the storm had cleared, peace settled over the Volkov estate like a warm blanket.

The family had moved out of the city penthouse to Damon’s sprawling, heavily fortified private estate in upstate New York—a majestic manor surrounded by hundreds of acres of pine forests, rolling hills, and a private lake.

The sun was warm despite the winter chill, casting bright beams across the snow-covered lawn.

Out on the wide stone patio, Mateo and Luz were laughing hysterically, running around in thick woolen coats, building a massive snowman with Lev, who had somehow been coerced into wearing a pink carrot nose by five-year-old Luz.

Camila stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass doors of the sunroom, holding a warm mug of cocoa, watching her children play. Her face was full, her skin healthy, and for the first time in half a decade, the deep, permanent anxiety in her eyes had completely dissolved.

Soft footsteps sounded behind her, and a pair of broad arms wrapped gently around her waist.

Damon pulled her back against his broad chest, resting his chin on her shoulder. He wore a simple black cashmere sweater, relaxed, warm, and entirely devoted.

"They've been at that snowman for two hours," Damon murmured, his deep voice vibrating pleasantly against her back. "I think Lev is officially under Luz's command now."

Camila let out a soft laugh—a sound so bright and sweet Damon felt his heart swell with joy. "Lev never stood a chance. She has him wrapping her around her little finger."

Damon turned Camila gently in his arms so she was facing him. He looked down into her dark eyes, his scarred thumb gently tracing her cheekbone.

"Are you happy here, Camila?" he asked quietly, a rare note of vulnerability returning to his voice. "Is this... enough?"

Camila looked at the man who had hunted down her nightmares, who had rebuilt her world, and who had spent every second of the last two weeks showing her that his love was an unbreakable shield.

She reached up, placing her hand against his warm jawline. "I was afraid for so long, Damon. I thought safety meant running. I thought being alone was the only way to keep them alive."

"And now?" he asked, holding his breath.

"Now I know that home isn't a place you hide in," Camila whispered, a radiant smile lighting up her face. "Home is where we stand together."

Damon let out a ragged breath, leaning down to press his forehead against hers. "I love you, Camila. More than my life. More than my soul."

"I know," she murmured, closing her eyes. "I love you too, Damon."

He pressed his lips to hers in a slow, deep, passionate kiss—a seal on a promise that had survived five years of darkness, cold, and pain.
