Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Ambush

Night fell over Manhattan like an ink spill. A heavy fog rolled in off the Hudson River, blanketing the city in a ghost-like haze.

Inside the Volkov penthouse, security was tightened to absolute maximum. Twenty elite guards, heavily armed, patrolled the perimeter. The private elevator was shut down, and the reinforced blast shutters were lowered over the panoramic windows.

In the master suite, Camila sat on the large bed, reading a storybook to Mateo and Luz. The children were clean, fed, and cozy, listening to her voice, completely oblivious to the war brewing in the dark outside.

Suddenly, the lights flickered twice and went pitch black.

The emergency red backup lights hummed to life a second later, casting a blood-red glow across the room.

Camila’s breath hitched. She instantly closed the book, grabbing both children and pulling them behind her toward the reinforced panic closet in the master bathroom.

"Mommy?" Luz whimpered, clutching her mother’s sweater. "Why are the lights red?"

"It’s okay, sweetie," Camila whispered, her heart hammering wildly. "It’s just a game. We're going to hide in the cozy room."

Outside the master suite door, the muffled sound of suppressed gunfire erupted—pop, pop, pop—followed by the heavy thud of bodies hitting the floor.

Camila gasped, pushing the kids into the walk-in panic closet, a room built with six-inch steel walls and independent air supply. "Mateo, hold Luz’s hand. Stay inside and do not open this door for anyone unless it's me or Damon. Do you understand?"

Mateo nodded bravely, grabbing his sister's hand and pulling her deep into the closet. Camila slammed the heavy steel door shut, locking it from the outside.

She turned around, grabbing a heavy brass candlestick from the vanity table, her knuckles white.

The master bedroom doors were kicked open.

A tall man in a tactical vest stepped inside, holding a silenced submachine gun. Behind him were two other armed mercenaries.

"Check the room!" the leader barked. "Moretti wants the woman and the kids alive! The boss wants to use them to make Volkov surrender his docks!"

Camila shrank back against the vanity, holding the brass candlestick high, her body trembling with adrenaline.

The lead mercenary spotted her in the red shadows. A cruel grin spread across his face. "Well, well. Look what we have here. The ghost wife."

He stepped toward her, raising his gun. "Where are the kids, sweetheart? Tell me, and I won't break your legs."

Before Camila could speak, a shadow detached itself from the ceiling alcove above the doorway.

Damon dropped down like a nightmare.

In one devastating movement, Damon drove a long carbon-steel blade into the lead mercenary’s neck. Blood spattered across the marble floor as Damon grabbed the man’s weapon, spun him around as a human shield, and emptied a burst into the second mercenary’s chest.

The third mercenary raised his rifle, but Damon surged forward, closing the distance in a fraction of a second. He grabbed the man’s wrist, snapped it with a sickening crack, disarmed him, and drove his knee brutally into the man’s ribs before slamming his head onto the stone floor, knocking him out cold.

The entire violent encounter took less than six seconds.

The room fell silent again, except for the heavy, ragged breathing of Damon Volkov.

He stood in the center of the crimson-lit room, dressed in tactical black gear, covered in his enemies' blood. He looked like the incarnation of death itself.

Camila stood frozen, her heart in her throat, holding the candlestick.

Damon slowly turned his head toward her. His dark eyes were wild, consumed by combat instincts—until his gaze landed on her face.

Instantly, the terrifying storm in his eyes vanished. The weapon in his hand dropped to his side. He stepped over the fallen men, rushing over to her.

"Camila," he panted, his hands trembling as he checked her body. "Are you hit? Are you bleeding? Did they touch you?"

"I... I'm fine," she gasped, her legs finally giving out.

Damon caught her before she hit the floor, lifting her into his arms, pulling her tightly against his chest. He buried his face in her hair, inhaling her scent, his entire powerful frame shaking.

May you like

"I have them," Damon whispered fiercely, his voice cracking with emotion. "I have you. You're safe. My God, Camila, you're safe."

Camila rested her forehead against his shoulder, smelling the iron scent of blood mixed with his familiar cedarwood cologne. For the first time in five long years, she didn't feel the cold. She felt protected by a shield that would shatter the world before letting her burn.
