Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Ranks

By midnight, Casa Bruno was turned into a fortress.

Floodlights washed over the manicured lawns of the Westchester estate. Twelve heavily armed security guards patrolled the iron fence line with tactical submachine guns, their radios crackling with low static.

Inside the master study, Ricardo sat behind his mahogany desk, surrounded by maps of the city and financial ledgers. Sitting beside his leather chair was Sabia, who refused to leave the wing of the house where Sesto slept.

The door clicked open, and Valerio stepped into the room, shaking rainwater from his coat.

"You called me back, Bruno," Valerio said, his raspy voice cutting through the quiet. "Is the dog causing trouble?"

"The opposite," Ricardo said, pushing a glass of scotch across the desk. "Where did you really get Sabia, Valerio? Don't lie to me."

Valerio took a slow sip of the scotch, his weathered eyes staring into the amber liquid. "I told you. A shelter."

"A public shelter doesn't train a retriever to respond to coded tapping," Ricardo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. He slammed his hand on the desk. "My daughter tapped a five-beat sequence on the floor, and that dog answered her in the exact same rhythm. Where did he come from?"

Valerio let out a long, weary sigh, setting his glass down. "He didn't come from a shelter, Rick. He came from a private kennel in Geneva. He was trained as an elite intelligence relay animal—used to carry encrypted micro-transmitters across border checkpoints without drawing suspicion."

Ricardo stood up slowly, his tall frame casting a long shadow across the room. "And who owned him before you bought him?"

"A shell company registered in Milan," Valerio admitted reluctantly. "A company funded directly by the Vitali family."

Ricardo felt a cold wave of ice wash down his spine.

The Vitalis. The rival syndicate that had been encroaching on his territory for months.

"Are you telling me," Ricardo growled, reaching into his suit jacket to rest his hand on his customized pistol grip, "that you brought a Vitali tracking dog into my home? Into my daughter's bedroom?"

"Listen to me, Rick!" Valerio urged, stepping forward with his hands raised. "Sabia was decommissioned eighteen months ago! He was scheduled to be put down because he bonded too deeply with a handler who died in the field! He isn't a weapon for them anymore. But he remembers his training!"

Before Ricardo could answer, a soft scratching sound echoed at the study door.

Sabia stood up, his ears pulled back, a low, barely audible growl rumbling deep inside his chest—a sound he hadn't made since he arrived.

Ricardo instantly drew his weapon, flicking off the safety. "Stay behind me."

He walked over to the door and pulled it open.

Sesto was standing in the dark hallway in her white nightgown. She wasn't crying. Her eyes were open wide, staring down the corridor toward the east wing of the manor—the wing where the estate's private server rooms and communications hub were located.

In her hands, she clutched a small, metallic object she had pulled from beneath her bed.

It was a broken digital tracking transmitter—the exact kind used by high-level syndicate spies.

Ricardo knelt down in front of his daughter, his hands shaking as he took the device from her tiny fingers. The casing was cracked, bearing a tiny engraved serial number.

PROPERTY OF MARZIO ENTERPRISES.

Ricardo’s breath caught in his throat.

Marzio. His own underboss. The man who had been pushing for an all-out war with the Vitalis all evening.

The betrayal wasn't coming from outside his walls. It was sitting in his own boardroom.
