Chapter 6 - The First Word

Twenty-four hours later.

The storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, sunny autumn afternoon that painted the Westchester estate in vibrant hues of gold, red, and orange.

Casa Bruno was quiet once more, but the suffocating darkness that had hung over its halls for months was gone. The Vitali syndicate was dismantled, Marzio’s traitorous faction was erased, and the streets were silent.

In the grand sunroom, the floor-to-ceiling windows were pulled open, letting the fresh, cool breeze sweep through the room.

Allesia sat on the plush sofa, holding a warm cup of tea, her eyes shining with a peace she hadn't felt in years.

On the thick wool carpet, Sesto sat surrounded by her wooden building blocks.

Beside her lay Sabia. The cream-colored dog was resting on his side, snoring softly in the warm patch of sunlight, completely relaxed.

Ricardo walked into the room, wearing a simple cardigan sweater, carrying a tray with small plates of sliced fruit. He set the tray on the coffee table and knelt down on the floor beside his daughter.

Sesto looked up at him.

Her dark eyes were no longer hollow or distant. They were bright, clear, and filled with childhood wonder.

She picked up a small blue wooden block and laid it carefully on Sabia's paw. The dog opened one amber eye, gave a gentle tail thump against the floor, and closed it again.

Ricardo felt a lump form in his throat. He reached out his hand, resting his palm open on the carpet next to her.

"Sesto," Ricardo whispered gently, his heart pounding in his chest. "Piccolina."

Sesto looked at her father’s large, calloused hand.

Slowly, deliberately, she reached out her tiny hand and laid it inside his palm. Her fingers curled around his thumb, squeezing with surprising strength.

She looked at the dog, then back up into her father's eyes.

Her tiny lips parted. A soft, raspy breath escaped her throat—a sound that hadn't been heard in Casa Bruno for seven agonizing months.

"Sa... bia," she whispered.

Allesia dropped her teacup onto the tray, her hands flying to her mouth as a sob burst from her chest.

Ricardo froze, tears welling in his dark eyes, blurring his vision. "What did you say, baby?"

Sesto smiled—a bright, radiant, beautiful smile that lit up the entire room like sunrise.

"Sa-bia," she repeated, clearer this time, pointing her small finger at the sleeping retriever. Then, her eyes shifted to Ricardo, her gaze filled with pure, unconditional love.

"Da-dda."

May you like

Ricardo pulled his daughter into his arms, pressing his face into her soft hair, weeping silently as he held her tight against his heart.

Beside them, Sabia sat up, letting out a soft, happy YIP! before resting his large head against both of them.
