Chapter 8 - The Legacy of Sand

The sun set over Casa Bruno, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of deep violet, pink, and molten gold.

On the sweeping green lawn overlooking the valley, a new wooden gazebo had been built, surrounded by rows of white roses and blooming lavender.

Ricardo sat on the stone wall surrounding the garden, a glass of wine in his hand, watching his family.

Allesia was sitting on a picnic blanket, setting out plates of fresh pasta and bread. Sesto was running across the grass, giggling uncontrollably as she played a game of tag with Sabia.

The cream-colored dog ran in gentle, wide circles, allowing the three-year-old girl to catch up to him, flopping onto his back in the soft grass to let her tickle his belly.

Luca walked up the stone path, holding a folder, but stopped beside Ricardo, looking out at the scene.

"It's hard to believe this is the same house from six months ago," Luca said softly. "You changed, Rick."

"I didn't change, Luca," Ricardo replied, taking a slow sip of his wine. "I just remembered what I was fighting for."

Luca looked at the folder in his hands—a report regarding a minor dispute over a trucking line in Queens. He quietly slipped the folder back into his coat pocket. "It can wait until Monday."

"Good choice," Ricardo smiled.

Sesto’s happy laughter echoed across the quiet valley as she piled a handful of green clover leaves onto Sabia's head, pretending it was a crown. The dog sat patiently, his tail thumping against the earth, his dark amber eyes filled with absolute contentment.

Ricardo walked down from the stone wall, stepping onto the grass. He dropped to one knee beside his daughter and the dog.

Sesto wrapped her small arms around Ricardo’s neck, giving him a tight hug. "I love you, Dadda."

"I love you more than the sky, Piccolina," Ricardo whispered back, pulling her close.

He looked down at Sabia, reaching out his hand to stroke the dog's broad head. Sabia looked back up at the mafia boss—the man who ruled an empire—and pressed his warm nose against Ricardo's palm.

In that quiet, golden twilight, surrounded by the peaceful rustle of the leaves, Ricardo knew that his empire wasn't built on guns, money, or fear.

His real empire was sitting right here on the grass—saved by a dog who didn't need to bark to speak the language of the heart.
