Chapter 4 - The Traitor's Echo

The air inside Casa Bruno felt heavy with the scent of rain and impending violence.
Ricardo stood in the dark corridor, staring at the small tracking transmitter in his palm. The tiny red LED light on the circuit board flickered faintly—a secondary signal transmitter was actively sending location data from inside the house.
Sabia walked up beside Sesto, nudging the little girl gently back toward her bedroom door. Sesto obeyed without a fight, climbing back into her bed and wrapping her arms around her blanket, her eyes watching her father with uncanny comprehension.
"Valerio," Ricardo barked quietly. "Watch my daughter. If anyone enters this wing without my permission, shoot them."
"Understood," Valerio said, drawing a suppressed firearm from inside his coat.
Ricardo walked back down the marble staircase, his shoes making no sound against the runner. He found Luca standing in the glass-enclosed conservatory, reading through a stack of shipping manifests.
"Luca," Ricardo said softly.
Luca turned around, startled. "Rick! You scared me. Did you decide on the harbor strike? Marzio is getting restless. He’s down in the security office right now, reviewing the gate camera feeds."
"Where is Marzio's secondary phone?" Ricardo asked, his voice smooth as ice.
Luca frowned, confused. "His secondary? He keeps it in his coat pocket. Why?"
"Walk with me," Ricardo said.
They walked down the underground corridor leading to the manor's security hub. Through the reinforced glass window, Marzio could be seen sitting at the master console, typing rapidly on a secure laptop while whispering heatedly into a burner phone.
Ricardo didn't knock. He touched his thumb to the biometric scanner, and the heavy steel door slid open with a soft hiss.
Marzio flinched violently, slamming the laptop shut and shoving the burner phone into his pocket. "Boss! You... you startled me. I was just checking the perimeter defenses."
"Who were you talking to, Marzio?" Ricardo asked, walking slowly around the central desk.
Marzio swallowed hard, adjusting his collar. "Just... one of my captains at the docks. Asking about the Vitali movements."
Sabia suddenly walked into the room through the open door, his nose close to the floor. The dog ignored Ricardo and Luca entirely, walking straight toward Marzio.
Marzio backed away, his face turning pale. "Get that damn dog away from me! You know I don't like animals!"
Sabia stopped two feet from Marzio's left leg. The dog didn't bark. He simply sat down, raised his right paw, and tapped his heavy claws against Marzio's leather shoe.
Tap. Tap-tap. Tap.
The exact same rhythm Sesto had tapped in the sunroom.
Marzio’s eyes went wide with absolute terror. His hand instinctively reached toward his hip!
CRACK!
Ricardo moved with horrifying speed. He grabbed Marzio’s wrist, twisting it until the joint popped, and slammed the underboss's head hard onto the steel console table!
Luca drew his gun, pointing it straight at Marzio's chest in utter disbelief. "Marzio! What the hell is going on?!"
Ricardo reached into Marzio’s coat pocket and pulled out the burner phone. The screen was still active, displaying an open encrypted call to a contact named VITALI MAIN.
"You set up the car crash seven months ago," Ricardo growled, pressing his gun barrel beneath Marzio's chin. "You tried to take my daughter out so I would lose my mind and trigger a war, leaving you to take over the family."
"It... it wasn't supposed to be her!" Marzio choked out, blood leaking from his nose onto the console. "It was supposed to be your wife! The Vitalis promised me full control of the harbor if I delivered your territory!"
"And Sesto saw you," Ricardo realized, the cold truth flooding his mind like venom. "She was in the car when your men ran them off the road. She saw your face before the crash."
Sesto hadn't been mute because of brain damage. She had gone silent out of pure, instinctual self-preservation, hiding her knowledge behind an unseeing stare until she found someone she could trust to pass the message.

"You're a dead man, Marzio," Luca whispered, his voice trembling with rage.
"No," Ricardo said coldly, pulling Marzio up by his collar. "He's our ticket to ending the Vitalis once and for all."
