Chapter 4 - The Shadows Return

Three days later, the private VIP recovery suite on the top floor of Chicago General looked less like a hospital room and more like a high-security fortress.

Matteo and four of Adrian’s most trusted capos stood outside the double doors, monitoring every visitor, nurse, and doctor with hawk-like precision. Inside, the room was filled with white lilies and orchids sent by business associates and underworld figures who knew better than to cross Adrian Moretti, especially now that an heir to his empire had been born.

I sat propped up in the adjustable bed, holding our baby girl—whom we had officially named Isabella Moretti—against my chest as she slept peacefully, her tiny chest rising and falling in rhythmic harmony.

Adrian sat in the leather armchair beside the bed, staring at Isabella with an intensity that suggested he was ready to fight an army to protect her.

“You need to rest, Adrian,” I said softly, looking at the dark circles etched beneath his eyes. “You haven't slept since the night at the clinic.”

“I’ll sleep when I know this room is impenetrable,” Adrian replied, his voice flat and resolute. He reached out, gently stroking Isabella’s fine, dark hair with the tip of his finger. “When you ran away six months ago, Elena... you thought I didn't care about the divorce papers. You thought I was glad to be rid of you.”

My expression tightened, the old pain resurfacing. “You didn't contest them, Adrian. Your lawyers delivered the signed settlement within twenty-four hours. You didn't call. You didn't look for me. You just let me walk out of the mansion with two suitcases.”

Adrian looked up, his dark eyes shimmering with a profound, bitter sorrow.

“Because someone inside my inner circle had put a bounty on your head,” he said quietly, the words dropping like lead weights into the room.

My breath hitched. I froze, looking down at him in horror.

“What... what did you say?”

“Six months ago, right before the divorce papers were filed, my intelligence network intercepted an encrypted wiretap from the Rossi syndicate,” Adrian explained, his jaw clenching so hard muscles ticked in his cheek. “They knew you were pregnant before I did. They planned to kidnap you to force me to hand over the port authority docks and half my territory. If I showed publicly that I loved you—if I fought the divorce or searched for you openly—they would have used you to destroy us both.”

He stood up, walking over to the window to stare out at the gray Chicago skyline.

“The only way to keep you safe was to make the underworld believe I had cast you aside. I signed those papers with a gun to my own heart, Elena. I sent you away so you could disappear into a place they would never think to look. I intended to find you the moment I cleaned house... but you vanished too well. I searched for six months.”

Tears welled in my eyes as the terrifying, tragic puzzle pieces of our separation finally clicked into place. He hadn't stopped loving me. He had weaponized his own coldness to build an impenetrable wall between me and his enemies.

“I thought you hated me,” I whispered, my voice breaking.

Adrian turned around in two swift strides, sitting on the edge of the mattress and pulling both Isabella and me into his arms, burying his face in my neck.

“I could never hate you,” he choked out softly. “You are my life, Elena. Both of you.”

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the suite burst open.

Matteo rushed inside, his face pale, drawing his firearm as the building’s emergency alarm began to wail a piercing, rhythmic scream.

“Boss!” Matteo shouted urgently. “We’ve been compromised. The perimeter sensors just tripped on the lower service elevators. It’s the Rossi syndicate. They found us.”
