Chapter 6 - Sanctuary in Lake Forest

The Lake Forest estate sat behind massive iron gates, nestled among acres of towering oak trees and private shoreline along Lake Michigan. It was a fortress disguised as a historic Gilded Age mansion, equipped with state-of-the-art ballistic glass, private security bunkers, and a dedicated pediatric medical suite installed specifically for Isabella’s arrival.
By midnight, we were settled inside the master suite. The storm outside had broken, and silver moonlight filtered through the tall french doors, casting gentle shadows across the hardwood floor.
I sat in a plush armchair by the fireplace, nursing Isabella while watching Adrian pace slowly across the room. He had washed up, changed into a fresh shirt, but the tension in his shoulders hadn't eased.
“You can stop patrolling, Adrian,” I said softly, breaking the quiet of the room. “We’re safe here. Even the Rossi syndicate can't breach these gates.”
Adrian stopped pacing. He looked at me, then slowly walked over, kneeling beside my chair just as he had done in the clinic waiting room days ago.
“I couldn't protect you six months ago,” he said, his voice thick with lingering guilt. “I had to send you away into hiding, watching you struggle through your pregnancy alone while I fought a war in the shadows to secure our territory. When I saw you in that clinic... looking tired, carrying our child by yourself... I realized how close I came to losing everything that truly matters.”
I reached out, resting my hand gently on his cheek. His skin was warm, his jaw rigid.
“You kept us alive, Adrian,” I said gently. “You played a dangerous game and you won. But the war has to end. We can't live like this forever—running, hiding, fighting off hits in hospital corridors. What about Isabella? What kind of life is this for her?”
Adrian covered my hand with his, turning his head to press a warm kiss into my palm.
“It ends tonight,” he promised, his eyes burning with absolute resolve. “Before you woke up this morning, Matteo executed the final phase of the operation. Marcus Rossi was captured trying to flee across the Indiana border. His capos have surrendered their territories, and the commission has ratified my absolute sovereignty over the city. No one will ever threaten my family again.”
I searched his eyes, looking for the ruthless mob boss Chicago feared, but finding only the man I had fallen in love with—the man who would burn the world to ashes to keep us safe.
“Does that mean... we can finally be a real family?” I whispered.
May you like
Adrian smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that reached his eyes. He leaned forward, gently resting his forehead against mine, while Isabella slept soundly between us, cradled against my chest.
“Not a real family, Elena,” Adrian whispered, kissing my lips softly. “An unbreakable one.”
