Chapter 7 - The Cleansing Fire

The dismantling of the Chicago underworld under Adrian Moretti’s final decree was swift and absolute.
Over the next three weeks, while I recovered my strength at the Lake Forest estate surrounded by pediatric nurses and devoted security, Adrian worked from his private study, systematically converting his syndicate’s vast illicit holdings into legitimate real estate developments, venture capital funds, and philanthropic foundations.
Old rivals were given a simple choice: retire overseas with their existing wealth, or face the full, crushing weight of federal prosecution backed by the ironclad evidence Adrian’s legal team handed over to the Department of Justice. Most chose exile.
By the time Isabella turned one month old, the underworld had ceased to be a battlefield. It had become a quiet empire, legally owned, securely protected, and entirely detached from the blood and violence of the past.
It was a crisp Saturday morning when Adrian walked into the master nursery. I was rocking Isabella to sleep in the glider chair, humming a soft lullaby, while sunlight flooded through the nursery windows.
Adrian walked up quietly, wearing a simple white linen shirt and dark slacks, looking more like an ordinary young father than the most powerful man in the Midwest. He held a small, velvet black box in his hand.
He didn't say a word. He simply dropped to one knee before my chair—for the third time in our lives, always on his knees, always humbled by the women he loved.
My breath caught. “Adrian... what are you doing?”
“When we divorced, I handed you papers that tore our lives apart to keep you safe from a war I brought to our doorstep,” Adrian said, his voice steady and rich with emotion. “When I found you in that clinic, you were wearing a plain silver band you bought yourself just to keep prying eyes away.”
He popped open the velvet box. Inside rested a magnificent, custom-designed diamond ring surrounded by deep blue sapphires—matching the color of the eyes I had stared into when we first met.
“Elena Moretti... my wife, my survivor, the mother of my daughter,” Adrian whispered, looking up at me with fierce, unconditional devotion. “Will you marry me again? Properly this time? No secrets, no shadows, no wars to tear us apart.”
Tears spilled over my lashes, but this time, they were tears of absolute joy.

“Yes,” I choked out, a brilliant smile breaking across my face. “Yes, a million times yes.”
He slid the ring onto my finger, standing up to pull Isabella and me into a long, unbreakable embrace.
