Chapter 8 - The Golden Dawn

One year later.
The sprawling emerald lawns of the Lake Forest estate were alive with laughter, music, and bright pastel decorations.
It was Isabella’s first birthday party.
The guest list was small, intimate, and entirely legitimate: federal judges, trusted family advisors, pediatric specialists who had saved our lives, and close friends who had stood by us through the darkest storms.
I stood on the stone patio wearing a flowing white lace summer dress, watching little Isabella chase a golden retriever across the grass, her toddler laughter ringing out like silver bells as she clutched a pink balloon in her chubby hand.
Adrian walked up behind me, wrapping his arms securely around my waist and resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder, inhaling the scent of my hair.
“She’s walking everywhere now,” Adrian murmured, a proud smile touching his lips. “I give it another month before she’s running the entire estate.”
“She gets that stubbornness entirely from her father,” I teased gently, leaning back into his embrace.
Adrian chuckled, pressing a warm kiss to my cheek. “How are you holding up, Mrs. Moretti? Ready for another year of reigning over Chicago?”
I turned around in his arms, wrapping my arms around his neck, looking out across the sparkling expanse of Lake Michigan where the morning sun painted the horizon in brilliant shades of gold, rose, and amber.
The clinic waiting room felt like a lifetime ago—a distant nightmare from a world we had successfully left behind.
“I don't need to reign over anything, Adrian,” I smiled softly, pressing my forehead against his chest. “I already have everything I’ll ever need right here.”
As Isabella toddled over to us, holding up her frosted birthday cupcake with sticky fingers and shouting for her parents, Adrian scooped her up into the air with a booming laugh, pulling us both into a tight, perfect circle of warmth and safety.

The shadows had vanished forever.
In their place stood the brightest, most magnificent dawn of our lives—unbroken, untouchable, and entirely ours.
