Chapter 5 - The Hospital Siege

The wailing alarm cut through the quiet sanctuary of the recovery suite like a serrated blade.

Adrian was on his feet in a fraction of a second. The sorrow and vulnerability that had defined his expression moments ago vanished completely, replaced by the lethal, calculating coldness of a Chicago mafia kingpin at war.

“Matteo, how many?” Adrian demanded, his voice slicing through the chaos.

“At least six armed men, boss,” Matteo replied rapidly, sliding an extra magazine into his Glock. “They bypassed the lobby security using forged maintenance credentials. They’re coming up the service stairwell right now. They know which floor this is.”

Adrian turned back toward the bed. His dark eyes locked onto mine, burning with fierce, absolute determination.

“They’re here for you and Isabella,” Adrian said, his tone absolute. “They think I’m vulnerable because of a newborn child. They’re about to find out how monumental a mistake that is.”

“Adrian, don't leave me,” I pleaded, clutching Isabella tighter against my chest as newborn panic threatened to overwhelm me.

“I’m not leaving you, Elena. I’m securing the perimeter,” he said, leaning down to press a fierce, lingering kiss to my forehead and then to Isabella’s tiny head. He turned to Matteo and two of his elite capos stationed inside the room. “Keep the door reinforced. If anyone other than me or my direct code touches that handle, put a bullet through it.”

Before I could protest, Adrian unholstered a sleek, suppressed Sig Sauer pistol from a tactical harness beneath his suit jacket, checked the chamber with a crisp mechanical slide, and strode out into the hallway, pulling the heavy double doors shut behind him.

Inside the room, the silence was deafening, broken only by Isabella’s soft breathing and the distant, muffled pops of suppressed gunfire echoing up the concrete corridor.

“Get down behind the bathroom bulkhead, Mrs. Moretti!” Matteo ordered sharply, gesturing toward the reinforced suite bathroom.

I scrambled out of bed, clutching our baby daughter against my chest, crawling behind the thick tiled wall just as a heavy thud slammed against the suite’s exterior door.

Bang! Bang!

Bullets tore through the heavy wooden door, splintering the oak and chewing through the drywall inches from where Matteo and his men had positioned themselves.

“Feds? No, Rossi’s dogs!” one of Matteo’s guards grunted, returning fire through the shattered door panels with controlled, professional bursts.

The battle outside was short, brutal, and terrifying. The crisp cracks of gunfire echoed down the hallway, followed by shouts, the sound of bodies hitting the linoleum floor, and finally... heavy, dragging footsteps approaching our door.

My heart hammered violently against my ribs. I closed my eyes, holding Isabella so tight she let out a tiny, sleepy squeak of protest.

Click.

The door handle jiggled.

Matteo raised his pistol, his finger tightening on the trigger—

“Hold your fire!” a familiar, gravelly voice commanded from the threshold.

The door swung wide open.

Adrian stood in the doorway, his custom Italian suit jacket stained with dark splashes of grease and blood—none of it his. He looked like an avenging angel of death, his chest heaving slightly, his eyes scanning the room to ensure we were unharmed before letting out a long, shuddering breath.

He holstered his weapon, walked swiftly across the room, and knelt beside the bathroom bulkhead where I cowered.

“It’s over,” Adrian whispered, wrapping his arms around us both, pulling us into his chest. “The hallway is clear. Matteo, get the backup vehicles ready in the subterranean ambulance bay. We’re moving to the safehouse in Lake Forest tonight. Nobody stays in this hospital another minute.”
