Chapter 3 - The Medical Evaluation and the Ghost from the Past

Within forty minutes, the Whitmore mansion transformed from a glittering high-society gala into a fortress under siege. Ethan’s private security detail, led by a former Navy SEAL named Marcus Vance, secured every exit. No one left. No phones went out.
Dr. Sarah Vance, Ethan’s trusted personal physician, knelt on the concrete basement floor beside Lily. Her hands moved gently, checking the child’s pulse, listening to her shallow breathing with a stethoscope, and shining a small penlight into her wide, dark eyes.
“She’s severely malnourished, Ethan,” Dr. Vance said, her voice tight with suppressed rage. “She’s at least three and a half, but her bone density and weight match that of a two-year-old. There are signs of chronic neglect—dehydration, vitamin deficiencies, and psychological trauma. Whoever kept her down here starved her of both food and human contact.”
Ethan stood a few feet away, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. Every word from the doctor felt like a physical blow.
“Can she travel?” Ethan asked.
“Yes, but carefully. I’m taking her straight to my private clinic at St. Jude’s. She needs IV fluids, comprehensive blood work, and a pediatric psychologist immediately.”
As Dr. Vance carefully lifted Lily into a warm, cashmere blanket, the little girl didn't cry. She pressed her face against the doctor’s shoulder, her tiny hand clutching the plastic cup like a lifeline.
As they walked past the main parlor, Gerald Whitmore stood blocked by two of Marcus’s massive security guards. His face was twisted in desperation.
“Ethan! Think about what you’re doing!” Gerald shouted over the murmur of shocked guests. “That child is connected to things you don’t understand! A syndicate—powerful people in Beijing and Chicago! You’re putting a target on your own back!”

Ethan stopped in his tracks. He turned slowly, his gaze freezing Gerald in his tracks.
“Let them come,” Ethan said quietly. “I built an empire out of worse monsters than you, Gerald. And none of them ever touched someone I decided to protect.”
