Chapter 6 - Shadows at the Safehouse

Peace, however, was short-lived in the cutthroat world of Chicago high finance.

Three days after Gerald’s arrest, Ethan received an encrypted message on his secure terminal: “The Whitmores were just the board members, Mr. Cole. The real owners are waking up. Give the child back, or your entire legacy burns with her.”

Ethan didn't blink. He forwarded the IP address to Marcus. “Trace it.”

“Already on it, boss. It’s routing through a shell company in the Cayman Islands, linked to a shadowy consortium known as the Vanguard Syndicate.”

That evening, while a thunderstorm rolled over Lake Michigan, the penthouse security alarms suddenly shrieked.

“Intruders!” Marcus’s voice crackled over the intercom. “Sector four—the private elevator!”

Ethan stood up instantly from the dining table where he had been trying to teach Lily how to draw with crayons. He scooped the little girl into his arms, pressing her head against his chest.

“Hold on to me tight, Lily,” he commanded softly, grabbing a heavy-duty tactical firearm from his hidden wall safe. “Just close your eyes.”

Down the hallway, the sound of muffled gunfire echoed through the opulent corridors. Glass shattered. Heavy boots thudded against the hardwood floor.

Marcus and two security operatives rounded the corner, dragging a neutralized mercenary in black tactical gear.

“They breached the lower service shaft, Ethan!” Marcus shouted, reloading his sidearm. “They’re sending a clean-up crew to silence the girl before she can testify before the federal grand jury next week.”

Ethan’s eyes flashed with pure fury. They weren't just fighting corrupt businessmen anymore; they were hunting killers.

“Take the armored panic shelter,” Ethan ordered Marcus, handing Lily over safely.

“Boss, what about you?”

“I’m going to show these bastards what happens when you bring a war to my front door.”
