Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the bitter Chicago winter gave way to the warm, golden glow of a Midwestern summer.
The sprawling gardens of the Cole estate were filled with the sound of laughter—a sound that had never echoed through these halls before.
Ethan sat on a white wooden bench beneath a sprawling oak tree, watching Lily chase a golden retriever puppy across the emerald-green lawn. Her pigtails bounced with every step, and her infectious giggles floated up into the clear blue sky.

“Daddy! Daddy, look!” she shouted, holding up a yellow dandelion she had just plucked from the grass.
Ethan caught her as she leaped into his lap, lifting her high into the air before pulling her into a tight, protective embrace.
“I see it, my princess,” Ethan laughed, kissing the top of her head. “That’s the most beautiful flower in the whole world.”
Lily beamed, her dark eyes shining with absolute joy and security. She wrapped her small arms around his neck, pressed her cheek against his, and whispered softly in clear, bright English:
“I love you, Daddy.”

It was right here, in his arms.
