Chapter 8 - The Empire Collapses

By the end of the month, the Vanguard Syndicate was shattered.
Armed with the evidence from Dr. Lin’s locket and the digital trails left behind by the captured mercenaries, federal prosecutors issued indictments across three continents. The corrupt politicians, offshore bankers, and hidden billionaires pulling the strings behind Gerald Whitmore were exposed on the front page of every global newspaper.
The Whitmore mansion was seized by the federal government, destined to be auctioned off and turned into a public children’s hospital.
In the sunlit atrium of Ethan’s newly renovated estate outside Chicago, flashbulbs popped as the billionaire held a brief, definitive press conference. He didn't talk about stocks, mergers, or market shares.
Instead, he stood before the microphones with a three-year-old girl sitting comfortably on his hip, wearing a bright pink dress, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
“Effective immediately,” Ethan announced to the sea of reporters, his voice ringing with absolute finality, “I am stepping down from day-to-day operations at Cole Enterprises to focus on my family. My legal team has finalized the adoption of Lily Lin-Cole. Any future inquiries regarding our private lives will be met with immediate litigation.”
A reporter shouted from the front row, “Mr. Cole! Is this child the sole heir to your fortune?”

Ethan looked down at Lily, who was busy trying to pull on his gold wristwatch. He smiled—a genuine, warm smile that the public had never seen before.
“She is my entire world,” Ethan answered simply. “And no price tag in the universe could ever measure that.”
