Chapter 4 - The Chicago Underground

By midnight, Ethan was seated in the leather-paneled study of his own penthouse overlooking the glittering skyline of downtown Chicago. On the mahogany desk lay a thick dossier compiled by his elite intelligence team in record time.

Marcus stood by the window, adjusting his cuffs. “We ran facial recognition and DNA markers against international databases, boss. The results just came in.”

Ethan looked up from a photograph of Lily sleeping peacefully in a sterile, high-end medical suite at his private clinic. “Talk to me, Marcus.”

“Lily isn’t a distant Whitmore relative, Ethan. She doesn’t legally exist in the Illinois registry. But her DNA matches a high-profile missing persons case from eighteen months ago out of Shanghai. Her mother was Dr. Mei Lin, a top genetic researcher who was working on a joint biotech venture funded by Whitmore Global.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “Dr. Mei Lin. Wasn’t her death reported as a tragic laboratory fire?”

“That’s what the Whitmores published,” Marcus replied grimly, tossing a translated police report onto the desk. “The fire was real. But according to confidential financial trails, Dr. Lin discovered that Gerald Whitmore was illegally weaponizing her gene-editing research for commercial cloning and trafficking contracts. She tried to smuggle her research—and her infant daughter—out of the country.”

“And Gerald caught her,” Ethan whispered, the horrific puzzle pieces clicking into place in his mind.

“Dr. Lin didn't survive the fire,” Marcus confirmed. “But the baby did. Gerald kept her hidden in his basement as leverage, or perhaps as a biological insurance policy, waiting for the right buyer in the Asian black market.”

Ethan stared at the photograph of Lily. The fragile little girl who had sung a Mandarin lullaby to a plastic cup was the sole surviving witness—and the rightful heir—to a billion-dollar conspiracy built on murder and corporate greed.

“Prepare the press release,” Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “And get the district attorney on the phone. We’re going to dismantle the Whitmore empire brick by brick, starting tomorrow morning.”
