Chapter 4 - The Web of Lies

I spent the night in the hospital library, my computer screen glowing in the dark. I had received the results from my private contact at the lab. The "red" blood—the original sample—was clean. The official lab report, however, showed traces of a powerful, long-acting synthetic sedative often used in veterinary medicine to tranquilize large animals.

He had been spiking her drinks or IV lines for months.

I looked at the "evidence" Evan had been showing the staff—the videos he claimed were of Claire. I found a way to access the metadata. They were edited. High-quality, digital manipulation.

He hadn't just been gaslighting her; he had been building a digital dossier to frame her as an addict suffering from psychosis. It was a masterpiece of domestic malice.

Suddenly, my computer terminal went dark.

I stood up, my chair clattering against the floor. The hospital was silent at 3:00 AM. A shadow flickered in the hallway. I didn't wait. I grabbed the printouts and headed toward the NICU.

As I rounded the corner, I saw him. Evan. He wasn't at the bedside anymore. He was by the central medication cabinet, dressed in a stolen lab coat, holding a syringe.

He wasn't going for the patient; he was going for the baby.

"Evan!" I shouted, the sound echoing through the sterile halls.

He turned, his face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred. He didn't run. He pulled a badge from his pocket—a falsified hospital security clearance.

"You should have stayed in your lane, Doctor," he said, his voice devoid of the 'loving husband' facade. "Now, you're just another patient record that needs to be erased."

I realized then that this wasn't just a sick man; he was a predator who had chosen this hospital because he knew its vulnerabilities. And he was ready to kill to keep his secret.
