Chapter 9 - The Final Act

The roof was bathed in the harsh, flat light of the helipad floodlights. Rain had begun to fall, slicking the concrete and turning the world into a grayscale nightmare. Evan was at the edge, his chest heaving, looking for a way down to the adjacent parking garage.

"It’s over, Evan!" I shouted, my voice swallowed by the wind.

He spun around, holding a small burner phone. "You think you’ve won? I’ve already sent the digital dossiers to the press, the police, and the hospital board. By tomorrow, Claire will be the headline story—the 'deranged mother' who lost her mind and killed her baby. Her life is over, regardless of whether I walk away or not."

"You underestimate the truth," I said, moving closer, my hands steady. "And you underestimate Mia."

Evan stiffened.

"She didn't just watch you," I continued. "She recorded you. On her own tablet. The one she’s been clutching since she got here. She’s been filming you since the day you started 'changing the blood,' hasn't she? She’s been waiting for someone to listen."

Evan’s eyes widened. He hadn't accounted for the child. He had viewed her as a silent prop, never as an active, intelligent observer.

"She’s a child!" he screamed, lunging at me.

We collided, the wet concrete offering no grip. We grappled, a desperate, messy struggle for dominance. I felt his hand wrap around my throat, his thumb pressing into my windpipe, but I caught his wrist, using the leverage of my medical training to snap his grip. As we fell, a squad of officers breached the roof door. They didn't hesitate. They tackled Evan, pinning him to the rain-slicked ground, the cold steel of handcuffs snapping shut around his wrists.

He went limp, his face pressed into a puddle, staring at me with a hatred that defied logic. He had lost, but the cruelty in his eyes suggested he knew he had succeeded in causing enough damage to haunt us for years.
