Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

I found him in the recovery ward, standing over Claire’s bed. She was awake now, sitting up, her eyes wide with terror as she clutched a pillow to her chest.
"See, Claire?" Evan was saying, his voice a sickening mimicry of comfort. "The doctor is gone. He’s had a breakdown. He’s the one who’s been hurting you."
"Get away from her," I said, stepping into the light of the doorway.
Evan turned, a small, black remote in his hand. He pressed a button, and the IV pump beside Claire’s bed began to beep rapidly, the internal motor whirring as it pushed a fluid into her line.
"This is a high-dose anticoagulant," Evan said, his voice cold. "If you take one more step, I’ll trigger a full-bolus release. She’ll hemorrhage internally in minutes. You’ll be the one who killed her by trying to play hero."
Claire gasped, clutching her arm. "Doctor, please..."
The drama in the room was suffocating. I had the lab results in my pocket, but they were useless if Claire was dead. I looked at the IV line. I had seconds to calculate the flow, the concentration, and the counter-measure.
"You think you’re smart, Evan," I said, moving slowly, my hands held up. "But you made one mistake. You forgot that in a hospital, everything is monitored, even the things you think you've hidden."
"What are you talking about?"
"The blood," I said. "The blood you tried to switch. You didn't realize that the lab technician saw you. She didn't report you then because she was scared, but she kept a digital log of the tray movement. The moment you touched that bag, the system recorded your biometric imprint. The police aren't coming to arrest a 'mentally unstable mother,' Evan. They’re coming to arrest you for attempted murder and digital tampering."
Evan’s face paled. He looked at the room, searching for the hidden cameras he had spent so much time disabling. He hadn't realized that the NICU and the ER were connected by a secondary, encrypted surveillance network.
"You’re lying," he hissed.
"Am I?" I asked.

Suddenly, the hallway lights flooded back on, white and blindingly bright. The sound of heavy boots echoed on the linoleum floors. Security had arrived, and they weren't alone.
Evan froze, the remote still in his hand. He looked at Claire, then at me, the reality of his failure washing over him. The predator had finally become the prey.
